Clitheroe 422324 (Editorial), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) Bishop appeals for support to assist Britain’s flood victims

THE Bishop of Blackburn, the Rt Rev Nicholas Reade, has written to every Church of England parish in Lancashire, requesting their support for the national Church’s Flood Disas ter Relief Fund. Parishes are encouraged to have a

retiring collection. Funds raised would support both urban and rural areas, through national church-based initia tives, the Bishop said. “Alternatively you might like to consider some other form of raising support for those in our communities up and down the country

who have been so badly hit,” he added. The Bishop has requested donations

should be sent to him at the diocesan offices in Blackburn. Lancashire dona tions will be split between the Church Urban Fund Disaster Relief Fund, handling provision of temporary

accommodation, food and counselling support in urban areas, and the Arthur Rank Centre, which supports churches and communities in rural areas. The national flood relief fund was launched by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu.

THE Maldives was the setting for the romantic honeymoon for Mr Thomas Ben- field and Miss Rachel Peel, following their wedding at St James’ Church in Clitheroe. The bride, a beauty therapist and hair

dresser is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Michael and Anne Peel, of Mitchell Street, Clitheroe. Her bridegroom, a project engineer, is

the son of Mr and Mrs Michael and Susan Benfield, of Willocroft, Sawley. The bride, given away by her father,

wore a ivory chiffon gown with draped skirt and an asymetrical bodice, decorated with beading. Her compact bouquet of rose pink sweet

akito, was encrusted with crystal and edged with greenery. Attending her and wearing tea-length

flamingo pink dresses of chiffon with empire-line, hand-beaded bodices, were Clare Ballance, Sarah Dibb, Gemma Bald win, and cousins of the bride, Rebecca Colebourne and Caroline Winkley. The dame of honour was the bride’s

bestfriend, Sevim Avci, who also wore a dress to match the bridesmaids. They all carried wands, made of sweet akito, bear- grass and crystals, bound with galax leaves. Best man was Darren Bateman, and the

groomsmen were Matthew Benfield, the bridegroom’s brother, Martin Peel, the bride’s brother, Tony Middleton and Andrew Pearce. During the ceremony there were two readers, Lillian Benfield and Dorothy Cosgrove, and there was also a featured soloist, Lillie Dugdale. The cer emony was conducted by the Rev. Mark Picket. Following a reception held at Mytton

Fold Hotel, Langho, the couple will con tinue to live in Clitheroe. Picture by Zoie Carter-Ingham.

1,200-plus entries and more visitors than ever filed through the doors of Clitheroe Royal Gram mar School’s Chatburn Road site. A beautiful display of

colourful garden flowers and arrangements was ample proof that weeks of continuous rain had cer tainly not defeated mem bers of the 12 institutes taking part in this year’s show. Skills in cookery,

preserves and many craft items, such as bobbin lace, parchment and a beauti ful embroidered fabric organiser bag drew gasps of admiration from exhibitors, guests and vis itors. Organisers of the WI

Show spend much of the year preparing for it, with work preparing the school taking two full days. With hundreds of

entries to stage it is no easy task. Amazingly on Saturday,

it took just 40 minutes to clear the myriad of entries, thanks to quite a few men who were thanked for their help and members who were on hand to remove their exhibits promptly.
