The idea with this engine is to offer a reasonable turn of speed and surprising economy. I t ’s a combination that makes more sense than the diesel alternative if more mod­ est mileages are covered. The Auris’ 1.6-litre engine


features Dual WT-i, a system that utilises computerised tim­ ing control of both inlet and exhaust valves. In theory, this promotes torque a t low revs and power a t high engine speeds. So what’s it like in prac­ tice? Let’s just say that this sys­ tem does b e t te r in terms of power than torque. The cabin has been


smartened up with a clearer dash design and OPTITRON instruments b u t materials quality is slightly hit and miss. There’s also a significant lack of oddments stowage space. For a car that namechecks the Volk-
