alloys which offer a decent compromise between lowering unsprung weight, keeping replacement tyre costs manageable and giv­ ing the car enough attitude to fill the whee- larches. The front spoiler is a little deeper and is punctuated by projector fog lamps. The headlights get a smoked effect which works especially well with lighter paint colours. Door sill spoilers visually lower the car and there’s a small roof spoiler atop the tailgate. I t ’s not going to turn heads but if you take a good walk round the car, you’re sure to be impressed by the way these latest changes have been integrated into the famil­ iar Micra silhouette. The interior features deeper cut sports seats, a set of the almost obligatory white dials and aluminium ped-


als. The changes aren’t all cosmetic either.


The steering system has been reworked to require a little more heft and return more feedback to the driver, yet despite the changes to the steering and the bigger wheel set, the turning circle remains as tight as ever, making the Micra an excellent tool for inner city manoeuvres. This unthreatening nature is key to the


success or otherwise of the 160 SR. Despite Nissan’s hopes, this car isn’t going to sell to the sort of testosterone-fuelled youth who wants the quickest and most aggressive car their insurance budget will allow. For all the work done on the 160 SR, it’s still a Micra and that probably won’t cut it with the Max Power or the Gran Turismo genera­ tions. Where the Sport SR may well score a few sales is amongst those buyers who liked the standard Micra but just wanted some­ thing with a bit more under the bonnet. They may well appreciate the racy touches, but above all want a good looking car that can cope with longer journeys without being harassed by articulated trucks. The 160 SR fits this brief very well and when these buy­ ers choose to sell the car on, it’ll make a very attractive and lightly worked used proposi­ tion. On paper, there’s not too much to fault


the Nissan Micra 160 SR. I t ’s inexpensive, affordable to insure, looks pretty funky and will be metronomically reliable. What it lacks is a certain machismo, but just as one group of buyers are turned on by huge spoil­ ers, gumball tyres and body stripes, another is attracted to the car’s low-key subtlety.

eration model was strong on safety and comfort but we’re told that the latest car is safer and more comfortable than that. It’s also greener, more ele­ gant, better to drive, has higher levels of build quali­ ty and superior reli­ ability. The car is bigger too. It’s grown in every major dimension but, spookily, it tips the scales 15kg lighter than before. It all looks like impressive stuff on Renault’s part. If the Laguna had its own suit, it could run for President. The Laguna’s


priced from £15,990 and offered with an impressive three year, 100,000 mile warranty as stan­ dard. The engine range is a compre­ hensive one with Renault aiming to cover the full gam­ bit of customer demand for per­ formance and econ­ omy. I t’s the diesel engines that the fleet business that props up this sector of the market will be focused on and that means the 1.5- litre dCi 110 and the 2.0-litre dCi unit that’s offered in 130 or 150bhp form. The highlight of the petrol collection is a 2.0-litre 16v engine with 140bhp that was developed jointly by Renault and Nissan but a 168bhp tur­ bocharged unit makes the roster to help sate those who prioritise perform­ ance. Six-speed manual gearboxes come as standard on alj models but the 150bhp diesel and the turbocharged petrol engine are available with Renault’s impres­ sive six-speed auto. Ifniisiiallv. it’s the

smallest diesel engine in the Lagu­ na range that will raise the most eye­ brows. At 1.5-litres in capacity, it looks an impossibly small unit to power a full- size family car. At least the HObhp output gives it a fighting chance and the real reason for its inclusion, the headline-grabbing 55.4mpg economy and 136g/km CO2 emissions, should attract a ready sup­ ply of cash- strapped company car users. The fleet market will be piv­ otal to the Laguna’s success or failure and the 1.5-litre engine’s 18,000-mile oil-change service intervals will help win it admirers in this sector. Since Renault


knocked everyone for six with the Megane’s enormous but ultimately well- judged rear end, its styling direction has veered onto a more conservative head­ ing. The Laguna is unlikely to have people swooning with bodywork that’s clearly derived from its predecessor. I t’s a neat effort with a


certain elegance courtesy of the clean lines that gen­ tly flow into each other. Stand-out features include the distinct shoulder line that runs down the flanks and right around the rear, the large headlamps and the high- mounted LED rear light clusters. With no grille to speak of, the front is domi­ nated by the large bonnet-mounted Renault badge. The previous gen­


eration Renault Laguna was always safe and comfort­ able but that wasn’t enough to take on the best that the medium range sec­ tor had to offer. With 4x4s, MPVs and junior executive models all eating into the core cus­ tomer base, Renault needed to give the Laguna a big boost and the latest model is the result. The manufacturer claims advances across the board with improved green credentials, refinement, quality and a more involv­ ing edge to the driv­ ing experience. The Laguna will


need all of the above if it’s to make headway but the initial signs are promising.
