Press release OCTOBER 2007
GET READY FOR WINTER WITH AG E CONCERN LANCASHIRE IN CLITHEROE
Age Concern Lancashire is running a Get Ready for Winter week beginning Monday 5th November to promote the need for older people to make preparations for winter.
Throughout the week, Age Concern Lancashire will be providing essential information on preparing for winter to ensure older people are warm and safe during the cold months.
Advice being offered includes:
Heating the home - energy efficiency and examples of heat saving measures Preparing your home for winter - preventative measures to help avoid damage to the
property Need for adequate home contents insurance - to cover you for loss or damage to your home, including frozen pipes and other damage
To help you plan for the winter months Age Concern Lancashire will be issuing a FREE NHS winter guide, 'Keep Warm Keep Well'. The guide offers simple and practical advice on heating the home, information on help with paying bills and home improve ment grants.
Top Tips to keep warm and well include:
Keep a constant temperature of 21C (70F) in all rooms. If this is not possible, keep one room warm and pre-heat the bedroom and bed before going to bed. Use draught excluders and keep curtains closed. Do not block up air vents as fuel burn ing appliances need fresh air to bum safely. Make sure you have a hot drink and food during the day and take a little exercise. When you go out always wrap up warmly in gloves, hat and scarf, no matter how short the trip.
Age Concern will also be giving out information on Energy product which has been developed in conjunction with Powergen to provide older people, often on low incomes, with better value Gas and Electric. In addition to looking at whether customers could be saving money, those who switch to Powergen will benefit from exclusive cold weather payments, free energy efficiency advice, free early warning hypothermia thermometer, carbon monoxide detector and energy efficient lightbulbs, clearer simpler bills and face to face advice and information.
For further information about the Get Ready for Winter Week, please contact Angela Newman on 01200 444423 or drop by your local Age Concern Lancashire Office at 18a Castlegate, Clitheroe.
