Goal nearer for new-look area

GRINDLETON resi dents have dug deep in a bid to renovate an old ten nis court for a multi

games area. The Grindleton Recre

ation Ground Charity, which runs the popular village amenity, has been appealing for funds to renovate the old court, which was put up in the 1970s. Mrs Carolyn Doherty,

chairman of the manage ment committee, said: “We have been very fortunate in securing grants from a num ber of sources,” “We are indebted to Rib

ble Valley Borough Council for awarding us a community enhancement grant early in the year, which was a posi tive start to the project and enabled us to erect the goal end. “We were also very pleased

th a t two local charities awarded us grants.” These were the Bowland Charita ble Trust, and The Harold and Alice Bridges Charity. “Their grants gave us the

security to take the project further, but we still needed a large sum to complete the project, so you can imagine how pleased we were when Clitheroe the Future and the National Lottery Fund - Awards for All - recently agreed to fund the final phase.” Mrs Doherty said that the

recreation ground was run on a voluntary basis. Its running costs were met mainly from events held throughout the year. “We have always enjoyed a good level of local sup port and I wanted to demonstrate this to the fund agencies we were ap proaching. This was why we launched an appeal for residents to donate £10 and sponsor a square metre of the court.

“We were aiming for

small donations from res idents and we were not disappointed.

“We have more than 70

registered donors, who have given sums large and small. One even succeed ed in getting her employ er, E-ON pic, to donate. Now that there is a visi ble sign of things happen ing, we are making a final appeal to meet our local sponsorship target of £5,000. “Donors wishing to

help can contact the treasurer of the charity, Mr Norman Kelly, on 01200441320.” The court will cater for

tennis, netball, basketball and five-a-side football, (s)

Man punched in nightclub row

TWO men became involved in a fight outside a Whalley nightclub after words had been exchanged inside. Blackburn magistrates

heard th a t as one was grabbed from behind by his arms by a third person, Dale Fielding continued to punch him repeatedly in the face. Fielding (21), of Calder

Avenue, Billington, pleaded guilty to assaulting Thomas Derby causing him actual bodily harm. He was re manded on bail for reports. Mr Peter Wild (prosecut

ing), said th a t Mr Derby had gone to the club with friends and they were sit ting outside after i t had

closed when Fielding ap proached. He started throw ing punches at Mr Derby, who punched back in self- defence. “At some stage, one of the defendant’s friends took hold of Mr .Derby's arms from behind,” said Mr Wild." While he was in th a t position Fielding hit him hard in the face four or five times.”

Miss Clare Knight (de

fending) said Fielding was on his way to get a taxi when a verbal altercation began with Mr Derby's party. “He thought the ag grieved was going to hit him and hit out himself,” said Miss Knight. “I t wasn't arranged.”
