Farming pair take national gold title

by Vivien M e a th ~ Lancashire farm in 20

A. FARMING couple who turned foot and mouth into an oppor tunity have brought the UK dairy indus try’s most prestigious award back to the Rib-

ble Valley. Finalists for the past

three years, Ian and Sally Macalpine rose to the top spot this year in the NMR/Royal Association of Dairy Fanners’ Gold Cup. The couple run the

200-cow pedigree Rib- blesdale Jersey herd a t Waddington and West Bradford.

They

restocked back to Jersey cows from Holsteins, five years ago after the 2001 foot and mouth o u t break. I t is understood th a t

this is the first time the cup has returned to a

years. After judging, the asso

ciation chairman Lyndon Edwards said: “I t ’s no mean feat reaching the finals for the third time. What really impressed the judges on this Lan cashire unit was the focus on producing milk to meet market require ments. The decision to switch to Jerseys post FMD was primarily to add value to milk. We also saw superbly high standards of stockman ship here, with great determination and ambi tion from the husband and wife team.” After the presentation,

in the London Farmers’ Club, Mr Macalpine said: “This is a surprise and a great honour. It is especially poignant this year, as it is 50 years this month since my father, the late Mr Geoffrey

MR MACALPINE is pictured with his prize-winning herd, and inset, a delighted Mrs Macalpine (s)

Macalpine, bought the farm, so this is a double celebration.” Mrs Macalpine added:

“We have gradually built a dedicated team who all deserve credit for this

achievement. The couple also won the Lily Hill Trophy for the third con secutive year, awarded to the highest placed Jersey herd in the Gold Cup competition.

Setback for racecourse

PLANS for the £100m. racecourse to be built on land between Simonstone and Altham have hit a setback. Developers had earmarked £4m. to

carry out a feasibility study into the area with a number of investors putting money into the project. However, just four days before every

thing was to be signed, one of the investors died suddenly, leaving the plans

up in the air. Mr Rennie Pinder, chairman of Altham

Parish Council, said: “It hasn’t been thrown into chaos, but it’s definitely a hic cup. The developers cannot do anything until the family sort out what is happen ing with the investor’s estate. It is thought that they are looking for other investors who may be interested. “The feasibility study will look at the

impact on the environment and roads and it is only until after that takes place that we will look at making a final decision.” At a meeting of Read Parish Council it

was reported that the company proposing to build the racecourse was in the final stages of completing its initial funding package and an outline planning applica tion was expected to be submitted around July 2008. I t is believed the racecourse will be sited

on land near the now demolished Milliards “glass factory”. Advanced tech nology will be used to create a super, all- weather grass surface, enabling the con sortium to guarantee up to 60 days of rac ing a year. A five-star hotel, leisure facilities, an

associated retail development, stabling and an equestrian training centre are also planned.
