Grammar school celebrates top marks from Ofsted report
by Faiza Afzaal
STAFF and pupils at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School have been in a celebratory mood after receiving an outstanding Ofsted report. Ofsted inspectors recently visited the
school, which was awarded specialist lan guage status earlier this year, and were extremely impressed with what they saw. They highlighted in the report that
standards throughout the school are very high and achievements are outstanding. They added: “This is an outstanding school. Staff and students are very proud of the school’s consistently excellent record in external examinations and extra-curricular activities such as sport and music. “The very high standards and achieve
ments are a reflection of the well-estab lished ethos of care and creativity. Stu dents feel safe, the behaviour is exempla ry and relationships are very good.” They went on to say: “Personal devel
opment and well-being are outstanding. Students’ behaviour is excellent. They understand the school has high expecta tions of them and very few fail to live up to these; they work very hard in lessons.” Inspectors commented positively on
the high level of teaching and learning at the school and the overall quality of the curriculum. Ofsted stated: “Teachers have excellent subject knowledge and use this very well to plan lessons that are often innovative and build on students’ prior understanding. “Staff demonstrate a high level of concern for, and commit ment to, students’ welfare and this con
tributes significantly to students’ excel lent progress, enjoyment and well-being. “The headteacher and senior leader
ship team know their school particularly well and provide outstanding leadership.” The inspectors gave top marks to the
school’s commitment to promote health ier meals and commended the good range of healthy and nutritious options avail able in the canteen. ■. They went on to praise the first-class
standard of education available at the school and sixth form centre. “Learners do very well and make good progress. “Students join the school with very
high levels of attainment and continue to build on these. All students leave school with at least seven A* to C grades at GCSE. “Standards in external examinations
are excellent. Around 10% of students leave the school with a minimum of five grade As at A-level.” . Delighted with the report, headteacher Miss Judith Evans, said: “This is a really
• excellent report, which reflects the hard work and commitment of everyone involved with the school - pupils, staff, parents, governors, trustees and the sup portive community. “What particularly delights me is that
they not only noted the high academic standards, but praised the behaviour and attitude of the pupils and the high qual ity of teaching and relationships within the school. “l am also pleased that they recognise
that students are encouraged to take a full role in school life and that they have had a strong influence in the school achieving specialist school status. “We are not, however, complacent. The
report acknowledges that the school’s self-evaluation is very effective and that it has the capacity to keep improving.” Also proud of the report is Canon
Philip Deardeii, Chairman of Governors, who said: “There has never been a better moment to be proud of Clitheroe Royal
Grammar School. If I was a parent I would be delighted to know that I had chosen such an ‘outstanding’ school for my son’s or my daughter’s education.” Our picture shows Miss Evans with
pupils proud of the glowing Ofsted report. (B051206/3)

SHOPPERS in Clitheroe are very fortu nate to be able to buy their quality pro duce from the second-placed World’s Greatest Food Retailer. Booths, the North of England’s leading
regional retailer, was awarded the number two position by an international academy of 2,000 industry experts. "The company beat all its British com petitors, including Harrods, Fortnum and Masons and Waitrose. Staff at the' Clitheroe store, many of
who are long-serving employees, have been celebrating the achievement. The panel of top designers, architects, analysts, jour nalists, suppliers and retailers was brought together by national trade publication,
“ The Grocer,” and asked to rank their favourite food retailers from anywhere in the world. They were impressed by the quality of the company’s offers, it’s focus
on local sourcing and head for innovation. Chairman of Booths, Mr Edwin Booth,
said: “We’re extremely proud to have been recognised as a world-class food retailer by independent food industry experts. Booths has always had a clear idea of what tnakw a regional food store so vital to its local community, with a focus on quality, and local sourcing policy and innovation.” The highest-rated British retailer was
Harrods, which came ninth. Established 159 years ago in Blackpool, Lancashire by orphan Edwin Henry Booth, Booths is the oldest family-owned and run grocery busi ness in Britain with 26 stores spread across Lancashire, Cheshire, Yorkshire and Cum bria. Pictured are manager Mr Atholl

.the firs t time they had gone to the show, spon sored by East Lancashire accountancy firm PM&M, to sell surplus from within the herd they have been building up for eight years. Chris's newly-calved
pedigree heifer, aged two years and one month, picked up three trophies in the pre-sale show. She won the Directors Silver Chal lenge Cup for best animal in show, the Henry Bradley "Trophy for the best home-bred animal and the Horace Bowen Memorial Trophy for the best pedigree animal. Later in the day, the heifer made top price in the auc tion, selling for £1,300 to pedigree livestock agent Aubrey Greenhalgh, on behalf of a Northern Ire land fanner.
Chris said: “We first
started building up a dairy herd at the farm about eight yeare ago, but this is the first time we have gone to Gisburn to sell any of the herd.”
In the in-calf section
Chris maintained a win ning streak with his cham pion in-calf heifer. She later sold for £950 to J. Shuttle- worth and Son, of Ryl- stone.
Richard Turner, auc

some of the best quality cattle and sheep from farms in the area, which we see as vital to the agricul ture industry. The dairy and cattle
show always generates a lot of interest.”
Beverly Calvert, mar

these shows is an extension of our commitment to agriculture in the region.” A delighted Chris is pic

Go festive green
EVERYONE hopes for a white Christmas, but this year why not think about having a greener Christ mas by reducing the rub bish th a t you send to landfill following the fes tive season.
I t is estimated that
around three million tonnes of rubbish will be created in the UK this Christmas and Lancashire County Council’s waste minimisation team are offering people helpful tips on how to keep this rub bish out of the tip. Sarah Holliday, waste
minimisation team leader, said: “This Christmas why not make time to do your little bit to make it a greener Christmas. Research shows that at this time of year almost half of adults either don’t recycle or let their usual good habits lapse, so try some of our top tips to help you reduce your household’s wasteline.” • Make sure that all
the food you buy is used, either f irst time or by turning the leftovers into something tasty. • Don’t forgpf to recy
cle your glass jars afKi bot tles after Christmas. Recycling just one bottle will save enough energj’^ to power a colour TV for 20 minutes. • Turn this'.year’s
Christmas cards into next year’s gift tags. • Recycle plastic drinks
bottles a t your local Household Waste Recy cling Centre. Recycling a single bottle saves enough energy to light a 60 watt bulb for six hours. • If you have a real
Christmas tree don’t for get th a t i t can be com posted. • Remember to recycle
your cans, from beans to beers, they can all be recy cled. Sarah added: “Over
Christmas, each person in Lancashire will throw away on average 50 kilos of rubbish, half of which could be recycled. So this year rather than turning your festive rubbish into festering landfill, look to turn it into something use ful through reusing or recycling it.”
