Halls of fame! by Maggie Bell

fHILE the multi-faceted landscape of the Ribble Valley has now lost its summer glory for anoth er year, certain features which are central to

community life live on, unchanged by sun or storm. Apart from the church, perhaps the most vibrant is the

village hall and the valley contains an amazing number and variety, not all of which are easily spotted by the passing tourist. To illustrate this, here are photographs of 10 of them,

some more noticeable than others as you enjoy a leisure ly drive through the countryside. With the help of the cryptic clues, identify the villages in which they are to be found. For extra help, the answers are in alphabetical

. order - but only if they are correct, of course! The first correct entry drawn will win a copy of "The

Lore of the Land: A Guide to England's Legends from Spring-heeled Jack to the Witches of Warboys." The book.

by Jennifer Westwood and Jacqueline Simpson, is an engrossing exploration of England's legendary heritage, containing practically every myth, legend and ghost story ever told in England. Of course, the Ribble Valley is featured, with tales from

Bolton-by-Bowland, Chipping, Ciitheroe, Gisburn, Lon- gridge, Pendle Forest, Sabden and Samlesbury. Pub lished by Penguin Press, the book is available from all good bookshops priced £20. 1. One of the old school - the Bash Street kids? 2. Straight from the ski slopes - or the Rockies? 3. This way to the ducks? 4. Alms next door? 5. Same colour but a notable music venue. 6. More melodies-Handel's Water Music perhaps! 7. Parochial between the museum and the church. 8. Are the front and back doors in different counties? 9. Full of eastern promise? Just the opposite! 10. Its wall plaque looks rather fishy!
