BELTEX prime Iambs sold for a stagger ing £155 or 408p per kg at Gisbum Auction Mart’s Christmas show and sale. Leading the sale was the champion pen

of five lambs from Robert Lambert, of Wigglesworth, which sold to Stephen Swales on behalf of Knavesmire Butchers, York. Mr Swales also bought the reserve cham

pion lambs from John Mellin, of Long Pre ston, and hill farmer Richard Caton’s 38kg Beltex lambs. A pen of South Country Cheviots, weighing 41kg, picked up the first prize

rosette in the hill-going class, shown by Billy Logan, of Malham Moor, Settle. They sold for 121p per kg to Bowland Foods, of Preston. Beltex ewes dominated the cast sheep

show, with Brian Breaks, of Newton-in- Bowland, achieving £65 with his five ewes. The pre-sale show was sponsored By PM&M Chartered Accountants and Pear son’s Farm Supplies, West Marton. Averages were: Prime Lambs 33-39kgs,

113p/kg; 40-45kgs, 117p/kg; 46-52kgs, 106p/kg; overall 114p/kg.

A FIRST class entry of almost 250 prime cattle went forward at Gisbum Auction Mart’s Christmas prime cattle show and sale. Judges Mark Duerdon and Mark Towers picked out

the champion, a 595kg pure Limousin steer from Ian Townson, of Clitheroe. This sold to the renowned Fisherman’s Retreat

restaurant in Ramsbottom for £2,440, or 410p per kg, smashing all previous auction mart records. The 16-month old Limousin steer, a previous Welsh

winter fair winner, was bred by David Huw Morgan, of Llanddeusannt, Llangadog, Wales. It was sired by the Limousin Kype Interrogate and

out of the dam, Haltcliffe Novel. Mr Townson was delighted with his success, com

ing just three weeks before emigrating to America with his wife Hannah, to take up employment on a sow breeding unit with Smithfield Foods, one of world’s largest food producing companies. The first prize young bull, a homebred Belgian Blue

from J. C. Walker and Son, of Dunsop Bridge, sold for £829 to Stephen Swales on behalf of Knavesmire Butchers, York. PM & M Chartered Accountants sponsored the

show and the auctioneers were Richard Turner and Son.

lambs caught the eye of pre-sale judge Mr Richard Cardwell, who had a difficult job in decid ing between a number of high quality entries. There were approximately 50 pens of show lambs and 800

commercial lambs forward in what was a busy first show and sale for Clitheroe’s new Live stock Auctioneer, Mr Joe Wor thington. Mr Lancaster’s championship

pen of four sold for £152 per head (357p/kg) to Mr George Cropper, of Accrington. The Reserve Championship, also a pen of four Beltex-cross owned by Mr Lancaster, sold for £87 (230p/kg).

A stunning painted lady takes top place in series

THIS stunning shot of a butterfly was the winner when Ribblesdale Camera Club held its first competition of the win ter series for projected digital images. Entitled “Painted Lady”, it was taken by

Lesley Marklew, of Riraington. Her picture was described by competition judge Mike Stanley, from Blackburn, as “having superb details and very sharp... the yellow flowers behind the butterfly were totally appropri ate”. Ken Geddes’ “Rice Terraces, Bali” was placed second. The judge said that the farmer

was in the exactly right position and the maze of paths led the eye constantly back to the figure. Mike Battle’s “Market 'Trader, Cairo” made third with its “friendly trader with a lovely smUe”. Ian Heslop was fourth, Graham Dudley received a Highly Commended and pictures by Jeff Cowling and Steuart Kelling- ton were commended. A few general points were made before the detailed discussion of the pictures. With digital projections, it is best to use

the horizontal format as verticals only occu py part of the screen and lose impact. A num

ber of the pictures were not totally sharp on projection. They were probably fine on a small com

puter screen, but when enlarged six or seven times on a screen, small focus errors or cam era shake becomes obvious. Enlarged images must be used for the final selection for compe titions. During the meeting, the Frank Seller’s Tro

phy for the highest club score in this year’s Inter-Club Photographic Alliance was pre sented to Ribblesdale chairman John Bradley.

I packed nty suitcase in the...

A CLITHEROE radio presenter hit the high note when he sang non-stop for two hours and raised more than £200 for a worthwhile community cause. Gary Townsend (34), of Bawdlands in

Clitheroe, took centre stage at the town’s cricket club and belted out folk and Irish songs to boost funds for Ribble Valley Radio (RVR).

Gary is no stranger to showcasing his

vocal talents in front of packed audi ences. He regularly entertains senior citi zens at residential homes throughout the Ribble Valley and more recently present ed shows and compiled a 20-track CD with the help of RVR chairman Mr Steve Suttie. In return, proceeds from sold copies of

his CD have been donated towards RVR. Speaking about his sponsored sing-a-

thon challenge, he said: “I really enjoyed it. I enjoy singing live on RVR and want ed to help the community station by rais ing money for it.” Our picture shows the talented singer

entertaining crowds in aid of a good cause, (s)

Climbers head for Keswick

THIRTY-SEVEN members of Clitheroe Mountaineering Club held their recent annual dinner weekend in Keswick. Despite early heavy rain and gale force

winds, groups set out on the Saturday to climb a variety of peaks in the area. One party made its way to Skiddaw via

Jenkin Hill. Approaching Little Man the wind

increased so much that members were forced to detour and find shelter. Contin uing up Skiddaw’s south ridge the group battled its way to the trig point and, after enjoying a little respite, descended to the north to pick up the Cumbria Way and make their way back to the start point. A communal evening meal was held,

with club chairman Brian Davies thank ing those who had prepared food and con tributed to a successful event. On the Sunday torrential rain and con

tinuing gales forced members to the national mountaineering exhibition at Rheged near Penrith. • The next outdoor event takes place

on Sunday, December 31st, when the group will leave the council offices car park at 8 a.m. for Scafell Pike.
