Valley sporte stars of 2006 ... Valley sports-stars-ef-2006 ... Valley JANUARY

CLITHEROE golfer Paul Dwyer was

about to live his dream as the profession al won a European Tour card for the 2006 season to tee off alongside some of the biggest names in the sport.

THE Sporting Trials season came to a

close once again and the Kibble Valley's very own mudplugger yet again met with success. Bill Rhodes had another easy win in

the Northern Phoenix Trials Car Club's 2005 championship. But he was unable to retain the British

Trials and Rally Drivers Association Sil ver Star as competition from Ireland was too strong.

^FEBRUARY"

■ THE nibble Valley's sporting endeavours have easily lived up to past yearly exploits and, in some ways, surpassed them. There have been the usual suspects, of course, who continue to excel in their chosen

discipline, as well as a few newcomers. But the undoubted individual and team success stories of the year were to be found

in the summer months on the region's cricket pitches. Clithcroe Cricket Club completed an unprecedented league and cup treble, as the

accomplished Chatburn Road side stormed the Ribbicsdalc League and won both the Ramsbottom Cup and Twcnty20 Cup. ; Meanwhile, Read Cricket Club's Will Driver made league history of his own as he became the first English-born amateur to make over 1,000 runs in the league’s histo ry, setting a new amateurbatting record for the Whalley Road club. The Lancashire Under 17s captain also broke into the county's second team this

year and won the Lancashire Junior Player of the Year award. Arid the other individual who stands out is cage fighter Michael Bisping, who

realised his dream of competing in America by winning an American Ultimate Fight-. ing reality, show in Las Vegas.

ADRIAN CAPSTICK looks back at some of the highlights of individual sporting and outstanding team achievements the Ribbic Valley had to offer in 2006

to enter an American reality fighting competition when Ultimate Fighter 3, a televised reality fighting competition, was aired in this country and the US. The former upholsterer and part time

D J endured a gruelling daily regime of ju-jitsu, judo, muay thai, karate, boxing and wrestling before retiring to the Ulti mate Fighter House, knowing that any day he could be forced to fight one of hfe house mates. At the time he knew he had made the

final but until the pre-recorded fights had been aired he wasn't allowed to disclose the fact. But as he said at the time, “This is the

start of big things potentially, very big things if ail goes to plan,” and he wasn't wrong as we later found out in August.

CLITHEROE golfer Paul Dwyer

claimed his highest European Tour finish of the season when he tied for 53rd place in the Portuguese Open.

CLITHEROE darts ace Andy Gud

geon was victorious as England earned a seventh-successive British Darts Organi sation Internationals title in Merthyr Tydfil. The Swan and Royal A and Lan

cashire county player contributed to the win, alongside some of the leading pro fessionals in world darts, including the

likes of Martin “Wolfie” Adams and Tony “Silverback” O’Shea, against Scot land and Wales.

ON the first day of the 2006 Veka Rib-

blesdale Cricket League Clitheroe duo, professional Shahid Nawaz and Naeeni Ashraf, started the season as they meant to go on, by cracking an unbeaten centu ry apiece in the Chatburn Road side's opening victory over Earby. Nawaz scored 112 as Clitheroe posted

a huge total of 252-2 from their 45 overs, and his partner Ashraf, weighed in with a gloriously crafted 103.

MAY CLITHEROE Royal Grammar

School’s Under 13 Girls football team ran out at the Riverside Stadium for the Coca-Cola Northern Schools’ F7nal. The Rihhle Valley youngsters took on

defending Northern champions Arch bishop Beck Sports College from Aintree at the home of UEFA Cup Finalists Middlesbrough and narrowly lost 3-2.

WADDINGTON FC won the Craven

League Cup at Gargrave by beating Grassington on penalties after the gamp ended 1-1 after extra time. RIMINGTON FC were crowned East Lancashire League First Division cham

inevitable was achieved as Clitheroe scooped the Veka Ribblesdale League title and completed an unprecedented treble with three games to spare. Victory away at Whalley, and then
