Hicli, sweet, spicy... the taste of Christmas

WHAT is the taste of Christ mas you may ask? My response would be: "It's ricb, sweet, spicy and full of flavour" which, believe it or not, sums up this month’s wine! So, name me three good things that come from Australia. Shane Warne, Ricky Ponting - perhaps cricket is not an appropriate anal ogy at this present time - and of course, wine. The wine this month is not any ordi nary wine, it's a sweet Muscat from the famous company. Brown Brothers. In 1975, three brothers in their 20s set out across Europe, sent by their father, John Brown snr, to find out about wine and to see if what they discovered could benefit Australian wine production. In the late '70s, of course, nobody saw any kind of threat

from Australian wines. How things have changed! So back to the wine. It is pro duced in Victoria in South East Australia, made with the Muscat grape vintage 2004,

and at 11 % alcohol by volume it is easy to drink. The back label states that it goes excellent ly with barbecued dishes and desserts, so this month's recipe of pannacotta will be a perfect match. Make no mistake, this wine is excellent. It’s clear, clean, fresh, grapey, not at all cloying and very sweet on the palate. Its rich pale yellow colour reflects the time the grapes have spent in the sun and with our weather dreary at the moment, this will certainly add brightness to any occasion. It is available at D. Byrne and Son, at £5.89

As the year comes to a close and we gather together with our families for some Christmas fun, it is always a time to think of people less fortunate and to hope that they too will have the pleasure of one of life's good things - wine. Enjoy your Christ mas, enjoy your wine. Vic Morns

Byrne and Co., fine wine and spirit merchants in King Street, Ciitheroe, was founded in 1879 by Mr Denis Byrne and goes from strength to strength with three generations working together. Andrew Byrne won a very prestigious

The national competition was open to all wine merchants through out the UK and Andrew won the prize for a month's promotion of Rioja wine and the wide range of the Spanish wine the shop carries. Andrew will be accompa nied by his wife, Wendy, to northern Spain, as she helped co-ordinate the entry. The Ciitheroe Advertiser andTimes also helped, by publishing two of Andrew's wine columns featuring Rioja and he also submitted the returned money-off coupons for Rioja wine from the Valley magazine which accompanied theViv Morris wine column.

m Another accolade was won by Tim

Byrne, the youngest of the three Byrne brothers, who has been rewarded with a two-week trip to New Zealand for his knowledge and enthusiasm in promoting the best range of New Zealand wines in the country. Tim, who has visited New Zealand and Australia previously to gain knowledge of New World wines, will be attending the very prestigious Pinot Noir convention in Wellington which will be attended by pinot noir viticulturists from all over the world, the culmination of which will be a grand dinner.
