park and were delighted to see such a big turnout this year from the young to, as Fr John would put it, “the older”. We were also

warmly welcomed by the new propri etors of the Black Bull, who provided baked potatoes half way round to keep everyone going, as well as a generous donation. “After visiting

most of the village, from Sarmatian Fold to Ribblesdale Road and down to the river, the evening ended with food and drink in the newly re-opened White Bull. Many thanks to them for provid ing the food.' “As always, the

carol singing was in aid of the Ribchester Playing Field Trust. We depend on peo ple opening the door and supporting us and, as usual, the residents of Ribch ester were very gen erous in their dona tions. As a result the tru s t has another £280 towards their work. Once again, many thanks to all those who took part and, donated and we'll see you all again next year.”

MORE than 700 balloons took to the skies over Clitheroe as part of the Great Rihble Valley Balloon race launch. The spectacular fund-raising event,

which was organised by members of Kib ble Valley Radio (RVR), saw crowds of schoolchildren and parents gather at Clitheroe Cricket Club for the launch. Fortunately, the green and white

coloured balloons were released amid a 70 m.p.h. gale and were very quickly cata pulted out of sight - although the condi tions were ideal for ensuring some very dis tant returns! Castle Cement sponsored the event and

the race was officially kick-started by Mr Lee Yates, from Ribblesdale works, and his daughter, Mia. Profits from the fun-filled event were

shared between Edisford Primary School, Ribblesdale High School Technology Col lege, St James Primary School, St Michael and St John’s Primary School, Kibble Val ley Radio and Clitheroe Cobras cricket team, who participated in the event. Mr Steve Suttie chairman of RVR said:

“Once again, we have really enjoyed anoth er fun, innovative and exciting event while raising money for our community radio station and local schools. “I would like to thank everybody who

entered the race, all the schools that got involved, the children who sold balloons and those stalwart RVR members who gave up their Sunday to blow them up! “Special thanks to young Joshua Dean

of Clitheroe Cobras who sold the most bal loons in the Valley — some 68 balloons! He was also the lucky winner of a £100 prize.” The closing date for balloon returns is

January 15th and the one that is returned from the furthest point from Clitheroe will be crowned the overall winner and receive a

cash prize. Our picture shows schoolchildren armed

with balloons at the Great Kibble Valley

Balloon race launch. (T041206/6)
