Meeting called to discuss the future of village’s only shop
by Helen McKell
MORE than 60 people attended a special meeting called by Hurst Green’s Parish Council this week to discuss a planning applica tion to change the village’s only shop into an estate agency. Mrs Sarah Leach, who
bought the shop 18 months ago, currently operates Sarah Leach Properties out of a small area of the shop floor. As well as a cross-section of
the village’s inhabitants, rang ing from the teenagers whom Mrs Leach described as “some of my best customers” to the

celebration YOUNGSTERS at Ribblesdale Children’s Centre, in Clitheroe, celebrated the Hindu festival “Diwali” on Monday. Practising Hindu Nisha
Parekh visited the centre in tra ditional dress and explained to the children the meaning of Diwali. She also cooked a variety of
Hindu dishes before lighting candles. Known as the “Festival of
Lights”, Diwali is celebrated by Hindus during the month of October or November at the end of the rainy season, and around harvest time. Diwali, also spelt and pro
nounced Divali, comes from the word “Deepavali”, which means “cluster of lights” and small earthenware lamps called “diwas” are lit in every home. Parents will be able to see the
wide variety of facilities the chil-' dren’s centre has to offer during its official opening and open day, on Saturday, November 4th.
The High Sheriff of Lan
cashire, Mr Peter Robinson, will declare the centre, which is based on Queen’s Road, open with parents able to take a look around the new facilities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

elderly who depend most on the shop, Mrs Leach, her family and her staff came along to express their views. Mrs Leach explained that
she is currently losing money on the shop side of her business, “£1,000 a month”, and that if she does not have more sup port, she will transform the entire premises, subject to plan ning approval, into her estate agency. From the villagers, there
were frequent comments on the tone of a letter, reported several weeks ago in the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times, sent by Mrs Leach to all villagers. In the letter, Mrs Leach list ed all the things she has done to
improve the services offered by the shop. She now provides fresh meat and fruit and veg etables, and has installed a deli counter, with an emphasis throughout the shop on locally sourced produce. However, in her letter she
claimed that those who only buy newspapers, cigarettes and sweets are not supporting the shop. Several people commented
that they have stopped using the shop in protest at the tone of the letter. Mrs Leach apolo gised if people had taken offence, claiming that was cer tainly not her intention. There were also claims that the shop does not stock the staple food
stuffs that most villagers would want to buy. Although there were some
claims from those present that Mrs Leach’s proposal to change the premises into an estate agency was a “fait accompli”, she rejected this notion. She assured those present:
“If I get to a break-even situa tion, I will keep the shop going.” Mr Peter Butterfield, chair
man of the parish council, summed up the situation: “There’s a challenge ahead - for villagers to support the shop, and for the shop to stock what people want.” In a show of hands, all pres ent, including Mrs Leach,
voted that they wanted to keep the shop open. Mrs Leach should know the
outcome of her planning appli cation by the end of November. Coun. Janet Alcock, borough councillor for Hurst Green and a member of Ribble Valley Bor
ough Council’s planning com mittee, who attended the meet ing as an impartial observer, advised all present a t the end that individual letters to the planning committee carry more weight than one letter signed by several people.
