A TRIO of young lads from Dale Head near Slaidbum were hauled before Bolton- by-Bowland Sessions to be reprimanded for disorderly behaviour in Dale Head Parish Churchyard. Each defendant was fined two shillings and six pence and severely reproached. • An illustration of the proposed new

Wesleyan Church and schools in Wadding- ton was featured in the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times. The architects had taken great care in designing the group of buildings. The scheme cost £2,000 in total.

his summer, I scaled new heights - in more ways than one. On a person al level, I successfully completed my Gold Final Expedition, the last of six for the

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. On another level -1,085 metres above sea level, to be exact - our group of seven climbed to the top of Mount Snowdon, one of the highest peaks in Great Britain, which Sir Edmund Hillary once deemed tough enough to use as training for his Everest ascent. Yet that was only the second day walking for us, out of four! Such elevating achievements would not

have been possible, though, had it not been for the excellent “base camp” from which we all started - believe it or not, in Whalley, over 140 miles away. Special thanks must go to our fantastic leaders, John and Lisa, based at the Ribble VaUey Youth and Com munity Service building there. For a few years, they have spent about two hours on a Friday night each month with us as we pre pared expeditions, planned routes and, above all, formed friendships. These friendships were an important part

of why I decided to replace relaxation with perspiration for “D of E” in the first place. When you’re faced with the thought of eventually trekking over mountainous wild country for 50 miles (as that is the walking distance requirement for Gold), the best remedy is surely doing that with friends who can provide just as many encouraging

A RECENT work experience place ment here at the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times was 17-year-old SCOT'T SMITH, a student at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School’s Sixth Form Centre. Scott is studying English Literature, French, Religious Studies and Theatre Studies at A-Level and hopes to make a living as a writer, either a journalist or author. Here Scott writes about how teamwork can help overcome the greatest of challenges.

smiles. There are also more practical rea sons for walking with imderstanding pals - someone else can tighten the straps to light en the load of the bag (mine was a fifth of my body weight) on your shoulders. Or help you over the many stiles and kissing gates we encountered while still wearing that bag. Or, in my case, plaster your gashed hand from when you stumbled and went for an ill- advised spot of tree hugging. My main point being? Well, I am not per

haps the usual candidate for the expedition aspects of Bronze, Silver and Gold - the three progressively more challenging stages in D of E. I have a limp in my left leg, from where a (harmless) tumour has been reiHoved. I have never been to a gsrni. My hobbies mostly revolve around food and TV. Duke of Edinburgh does involve eating

LOOKING BACK 50 years ago

FOR the seventh time within the previous five years the 4ft. high stone garden wall outside the corner house of Mr Arthur Neville Chatburn, of Downham Road, Chatburn, had been damaged or demol ished by heavy vehicles. This latest damage was believed to have

been caused by a heavy lorry, which failed to stop. • Production was again in full swing at

the chair works of Messrs W. Hanson and Son Ltd., Sun Street, Clitheroe, where the third floor was damaged by fire.

plenty of food, but only that which is light est for your pack and most nourishing for your body. In other words, I had that choco late bar not because i t was tasty, but because it would keep me going and stop digging into my back. As for TV, the closest we got was “Poirot” in Welsh on the night before we started. Put simply, I resolved to keep on walking

for all three stages, for a total of around 200 miles since I was 15, because I had got to know the people that I would be walking with. To say that my fellow hikers were behind me all the time would be both right and wrong - we all took it in turns to lead - but, speaking for all of us, I could not have done it without the others. Looking back now on our various group singalongs (per formed with vastly differing levels of enthu siasm), “Lean On Me” really should have featured. It is almost ironic that an emphasis of the

scheme is self-sufficiency when the group relied on each other so much. Self-confi dence, however, was something that we all developed massively - not bad for a few days! So, if you’re between 14 and 25, want to make loads of new friends and want to know more - and there is so much more - log on to www.theaward.org. Don’t think you’re up to it? Neither did

CLITHEROE traders were all set to brighten up the streets for Christmas in a bid to make the town centre more attrac tive to festive shoppers. The Clitheroe and District Chamber of Trade was determined to make it a Christmas to remember. • Ribble Valley councillors this week

pressed for the removal of a waste disposal unit near the Petre Arms, Langho, despite the pleas of a county council delegation. Conn. George Slynn, chairman of the county highways committee reiterated the need for skips in the Ribble Valley.

gions there is great uproar from these faithful whose sensibilities have been impinged upon. Peo ple in the public eye and com mentators have to be very care- ful in what they say and, at times, it is like walking on eggshells.

Witness the recent great

furore over the classroom assis tant wearing the full Muslim veil. While it is true that every religion has the right to express its faith in public, there has to be a reasonableness in approach to such matters. Surely common- sense should have told this indi vidual that covering her face might create problems in com- municating with children. While I accept that we live in '

legally, i.e. Christianity, always seems to be on the back foot, on the defensive and, at times, a.pologetic? On the TV and in the press, Christianity can be laughed at, belittled and, at worst, marginalised. All too often when Christians make a public stand they are

derided from all quarters. Mus lims can wear their veils, the Sikte their turbans and the Jews their skullcaps. On the other hand a British Airways employ ee and TV presenter Fiona Bruce were told they could not

wear their crosses. Some councils have banned the word “Christ mas”. I have even heard of peo ple being reprimanded at work for talking about their Christian faith to their colleagues. If this country is so passion

ately anti-Christian, what’s the next step? The de-establish ment of the Church of Eng land? If minorities can express their faith publicly, then Chris tianity should be even more

entitled to express its. Rev. Stephen Foster,
