Awards galore for the area’s tourism spots

TOURISTS visiting the Ribble VaUey are rewarded with some of the best experiences the North-West has to offer. That much was evident when the third

annual England’s Northwest Tourism Awards were announced on Tuesday at Manchester’s Hilton Hotel. Among the winners were The Three Fish

es, at Mitton, which triumphed in the Taste of England’s Northwest category and the Stanley House hotel, at Mellor, winner of the Small Hotel of the Year Award. Another Ribble Valley success story,

Wolfen Mill Country Retreats, at Chip ping, was one of three finalists in the Self- Catering Holiday of the Year category, nar rowly missing out on the title. The high-profile awards event was organ

ised by the Northwest Regional Develop ment Agency (NWDA) and hosted by BBC North West Tonight presenters Gor don Bums and Dianne Oxberry. It aims to recognise and reward only the very best of the region’s burgeoning tourism industry.

Plans in for conversion

A PLANNING applica tion has been submitted to Ribble Valley Borough Council for the conversion of first and second floor to flats and create a door through an existing win dow. Comments on the pro

posal at 9 Market Place, Clitheroe (number 0750) must be made to the coun cil by November 10th. Other applications sub

mitted for Clitheroe include: Erection of a garage at

24 Newlands Avenue (0834). Levelling of gar den area to rear, building of retaining wall, paving and fencing at 99 High- field Road (0835). New conservatory to rear eleva tion of property at 5 Bev erley Close (0840). Con version of workshop/office into two affordable flats at G.D. Porter, Woone Lane (0849). Rosewood PVCu conservatory to rear eleva- tion at 17 Windermere Avenue (0850). Proposed construction of single storey entrance and gar den room extension, including associated exter nal landscaping works, construction of open tim ber porch to serve front door at Kilnhold, 97 Chat- burn Road (0854). -

The Three Fishes, a carefully restored

country pub, impressed judges who were looking for innovation and creativity in the use or promotion of local produce, as well as the offer of a unique visitor experience. The Three Fishes met all these criteria with ease, offering the freshest local produce, almost totally sourced from local suppliers. Sheila Dillon, presenter of BBC Radio 4’s

Food Programme and one of the judges, said: “The Three Fishes is a real Lancashire gem - eat there and you know you’re in a region with a long history of appreciating the best food. “The cooking is first-rate and unpreten

tious. The menu alone is worth the price of a meal - linking each delicious dish to a map that traces all the suppliers. Beautiful black and white photographs of the suppli ers line the walls and it’s all packed into a simple, good-looking, welcoming pub. No region in France could do it better.” In the Small Hotel of the Year category, judges were looking for exceptional customer care as well as a commitment to excellence and

quality in all areas. Stanley House, the lux urious “boutique hotel” at Mellor, met their criteria with ease, offering sumptuous, relaxing surroundings and thoughtful, pro fessional service. Mandy Lane, Director of Tourism Live

and one of the judges, said: “Set in the peaceful and secluded heart of the Lan cashire countryside, Stanley House has been sjrmpathetically and carefully restored into an elegant country house hotel. Fur nished throughout with flair and imagina tion, this coupled with the exquisite quality of the food arid the exceptional and atten tive service of the staff distinguishes Stan ley House as the best small hotel in Eng land’s Northwest.” Representatives of both The Three Fish

es and Stanley House walked away with gleaming trophies to mark their achieve ment.

BUDDING entrepreneurs from Ribblesdale High School Technology College, Clitheroe, have been all smiles after winning a major competition. Entrepreneurial spirit was alive and well when

an eight-strong team of pupils beat strong com petition from fellow competitors to scoop the Lancashire Area Enterprise Challenge of the Hyndburn, Ribble Valley and Rossendale “Heat” competition.

The talented company, called “Ignite”, had the

task of turning around a failing business in a day! Their company was a chain of well-known public houses, which they had to transform into popular social venues. The pupils had to finance the project, design a

derelict pub and book live bands to play at the venue. The challenge also included drawing up a

business plan in four hours, as well as organising a presentation, a website advertising the new venue and deliver a five-minute speech to a panel of expert judges. After the event, school teacher Mr Neil Ash

worth, said: “I t was an enjoyable, but stressful day. The key to the team’s success was teamwork. They worked very hard and well together.” The pupils now face an anxious wait for the

finals to be held at the Broughton Business Enterprise College on November 15th. Our picture shows pupils Lauren Slater, Joanne

Tattersall, James O’ Connor, Amy Rignall, Joe Mullin, Hannah Pym, Katie Bailey and Jay Jay Rainford celebrating success. (B191006/3)

Farmers enjoy prestigious sheep success

ROWLAND farmers J. C. Walker and Son enjoyed success at Skipton Auction M a r t’s prestigious multi-breeds prize show and sale. A home-bred ram lamb from the Walk

ers’ flock at Brennand Farm, Dunsop Bridge, was judged best of the Blue

Faced Leicesters. It was a case of coming full circle, as this year’s champion was out of the champion bought by the Walkers at last year’s Skipton multi-breeds fix ture. The annual multi-breeds prize show and sale of pedigree and pure-bred rams

and females saw more than 1,400 sheep pass through the five sales rings in opera tion at the busiest sheep sales day of the year at Skipton. The event was supple mented by the 115th show of Wensleydale Longwood Sheep and the second annual sale of pedigree Illue Texels.
