suggestions that owners of these vehicles should pay more taxes and be banned from some places altogether. The critics of these vehicles claim that they are too big, unsafe in the community, damage the environment and are only driven by inspi rational urban women to do their shop ping. A careful examination of the facts, however, gives a different picture. The average CO2 of a dual-purpose 4x4

emits 12% less than most luxury saloons and is on a par with emissions from execu tive and sports cars. Most 4x4s sold in this country are diesels, which generally have a much lower CO2 emissions and far better fuel consumption than petrol models. While being taller than most other vehi
cles on the road, the popular 4x4s are nar rower and shorter then the average saloon cars. It is argued that if parents on the school run combined to use all the seats available using a 4x4 then the actual num ber of cars on the road would be signifi cantly reduced. Research has shown that owners of 4x4s with three rows of seats regularly use them. Recent improvements to the design of
the front ends of 4x4s have meant that many now score very highly on pedestri an protection in Euro NCAP tests. Many people chose 4x4s because they
are flexible vehicles that can adapt to many different tasks. The fact that they have a high driving position for example, appeals to many women who feel that an ordinary saloon or hatchback does not given them the all round visibility that 4x4s afford. Provided 4x4s are used responsibly, they
do not present any additional hazards on our roads and can be much safer than other vehicles.
THE ubiquitous 4x4 has come in for some stiff criticism recently with
by Andy Enright IF ever an object lesson was
required in how to scupper the chances of selling your 4x4 vehicle, Mitsubishi wrote it with the Out- lander. It’s not a very long volume but it
is instructive. Just offer your vehicle without a diesel engine option, give it a piggy snout and the market will do the rest for you. Guaranteed fail ure. Fortunately for Mitsubishi, rec tifying those two major shortcom ings isn’t rocket science and the lat est generation Outlander does that while offering a lot more besides. It seems this is a car we should now be paying attention to. First shown in Europe at the 2006
Paris Show, the ‘Outlander-Concept’ gave some unsubtle hints as to what we could expect from a production- ready vehicle. Pride of place went to a diesel engine developed by Volk swagen, the l,968cc, turbo-charged and intercooled, DOHC, 16-valve, EU-4 compliant powerplant which might also be familiar to Mitsubishi customers as it’s fitted to the Gran- dis Di-D people carrier. Mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, it produces 139bhp, 310Nm of torque and is good for a top speed of llTmph. It also allows Mitsubishi to tap
into the 67% of potential customers who want a diesel engine in a 4x4 instead of targeting the 23 per cent who prefer something that drinks from a green pump. The old 158bhp
2.4-litre MIVEC engine wasn’t a bad unit per se but it certainly liked a drink. ’The diesel fitted to the lat est car will return combined econo my figures in the region of 42mpg - a massive improvement. As indeed is the car’s sty ling .
Quite what Mitsubishi were think ing when they signed off the final design for the original Outlander is open to conjecture but it would nev ertheless have been intriguing to see what the company rejected. The lat est car is a far cleaner, less extreme design than the first Outlander and will sell better as a result. Plugging straight into the main vein of the fastest growing 4x4 seg

ment in Europe, the Outlander is a crucial vehicle for a company that’s following a roadmap back to prof itability. The total sales for vehicles of this type across Europe were 325,000 in 2001 and are now stand ing at just over 500,000 units with growth estimated at a further 35 per cent between now and 2009. Going head to head with the likes of the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V is an unenviable task but Mitsubishi is confident that the hardware is now in place. 'There are definite RAV4 design
cues about the Outlander, especially around the rear pillars, but it has to be one of the best looking cars in its

class now - composed and athletic where its predecessor was boxy and wilfully weird. The rising window line gives it a dsmamic stance while the front-grille is a whole lot happier looking, conforming to Mitsubishi’s so-called ‘Mount Fuji’ family look. I didn’t come up with that name, by the way. Underneath the classy body is a
chassis that’s been developed in con junction with DaimlerChrysler. This new C-segment platform, as compa ny insiders call it, will form the basis for a string of new models to be launched within the next few years from both within Mitsubishi and the DaimlerChrysler group as a whole.
