Brothers' performance proves a real delight
TWO young men, Jonathan and Tom Scott, gave a dynam ic recital of piano duets for the first Clitheroe Concerts Society performance of the new season. Both of them are on the staff
of the Royal Northern College of Music and between them the brothers’ knowledge of music must be very compre hensive. Their programme was enter
taining and wide ranging, with works by Rossini, Debussy, Bach, Dvorak, Brahms, Ravel, Liszt and an encore by IJelibes. To everyone’s delight, the per formers achieved perfect syn

were keen to express the ir appreciation and many of them shook hands with the brothers before leaving the hall. The next concert is by the

HUMANITY is sitting on a ticking time bomb. If the vast majority of the world’s scientists are right, we have just 10 years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail spin of epic destruction involving extreme vyeather floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced. “An Inconvenient Truth” follows for
mer vice-president of the USA, A1 Gore, who, in the wake of defeat in the 2000 election, re-set the course of his life to focus on a last-ditch, all-out effort to help save the planet from irrevocable change.
A GLITTERING occasion was how Nigel and Ysanne Williams, of the Spread Eagle, Sawley, described an award cere mony held at Manchester University’s Whitworth Hall. The Lancashire Life’s Food and Wine
Awards are equivalent to the “Oscars” for the North West’s restaurants and hotels. Winners of the Lancashire Restaurant
of the Year category was Cassis, the acclaimed restaurant at Stanley House, Mellon Cassis came top from the Dining Room, Rawtenstall, and the Peacock Room, Bamford, to win the award.
i * V* , , "
Gore pulls no punches in explaining the dire situation. Interspersed with the bracing facts and future predictions, it is the story of Gore’s personal journey from an Idealistic college student to a man who almost became president. But the real horrors come from seeing
the projections if we don't do anything to curb global warming. Everyone who cares about our envi
ronment should see this film. Following the first screening, on Mon
day, members of the local Friends of the Earth group will host a short discussion forum at the St Mary’s Centre, focussing on issues raised in the film. Everyone is welcome to stay and take
part. The group will also mount a special display, with leaflets to take away and Fairtrade goods on sale, available at all three screenings.
Glittering night to remember The Casual Dining Award was won by
Sawley’s Spread Eagle, which was short listed with the Eagle and Child, Bispham Green, and Weezos, of Clitheroe. Proprietors Nigel and Ysanne Williams,
who have been at the Spread Eagle for the past six years, were delighted to receive their award from actor Chris Bisson, who played Vikram Desai in Coronation Street.
In the Lancashire Hotel of the Year,
the Inn at Whitewell was on a shortlist of three, the eventual winner being Hipping Hall, at Cowan Bridge.
All about farming
A FREE guided farm walk at New Laund Farm, Whitewell, near Chipping, has been organised by Myer- scough College to make the public more aware about the farming practices used to produce food. The walk will also promote access in the countryside for learning how to take care of it and for enjoyment. The walk will take place
on Sunday from 10-30 a.m. to 1-30 p.m. when farmer John Alpe will take the group on a guided tour over his farmland (moderate hill walking involved) and an expert from the RSPB will be on hand to talk about the wild birds and how the land
is being managed to encour age them. On return to the farm,
there will be an opportunity to tour the buildings and see the animals and machinery. Visitors can view the dis plays and information about the countryside and local food. Children’s activities will also take place, but the day is not recommended for chil dren under
eight. To book a place tel. Hath Lowe at the Rural Business Centre, Myerscough College on 01995 642255.

Calling all men - where are you?
IT might be raining men elsewhere in Lancashire, but
in Henthorn,
Clitheroe, there’s a drought!
The members of the
Phoenix Club, based at the Henthom Community Centre, have put out a plea to blokes - come and join us!
The over-55s club has
49 members, but only half-a-dozen are men. Retired nurse and grand mother Florence Bennett, who is the club’s secretary, said: “We recently re launched the club and have drawn up a varied programme of activities over the coming months, but we need more mem bers to make it viable, especially men. “We aren’t a lonely
hearts club and don’t have any ulterior motives, but only have a couple of reg ular male members and would like more.” The club meets daily at
the Henthorn Community Centre, which is part of Ribble Valley Borough Council’s Henthorn Shel tered Housing Scheme. It hosts sessions in exercise, art, dominoes and cards, as well as talks and film shows. There is also a var ied programme of away days. Florence added: “We
are calling on the men of Henthom to drop into the club any time of the day. They will certainly receive a warm welcome and might even enjoy them selves!” Forthcoming events at
the Phoenix Club include a film show on “Clitheroe Past and Present” at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 15th, and a Christmas Fair from 1 p.m. on Saturday, Novem ber 25th. Further details are
available from Florence Bennett on 01200 422964.
