BURRITOS and Beefilicious Burgers put young chefs from two Clitheroe high schools in first and second place in a national compe tition. Celebrity chef James Martin
crowned David Farinha, of Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, the outright winner of the Beef Mince Young Chef Challenge 2006. Runners-up were Hannah Gibson
and Katie Burnie, of Ribblesdale High School Technology College, giv ing Clitheroe a remarkable “one-two” in the nationwide talent search. Earlier this year, the English Beef
and Lamb Executive (EBLEX) launched the nationwide Quality Standard beef mince competition - the Young Chef Challenge - to find talented chefs of the future. The free competition was set up to
inspire young people to get cooking and encourage them to take a greater interest in the foods they eat. Entries from secondary schools
from all over England were sent in and a shortlist was chosen by the panel of judges to go forward to the finals. James Martin headed the judging
panel at the final cook-offs at Leeds Thomas Danby College, where final ists cooked up their winning beef
mince recipes against the clock. Competition was fierce, with stu
dents given just one hour in which to prepare and cook their dishes. Contestants were asked to submit
an original recipe of a beef mince dish, with a budget of £10, with everything from “Glazed Caribbean
Meatballs” to “Aromatic Madras Mince” put forward. After much deliberation, the judges

chose David’s beefy Burritos as the outright winner, with Hannah and Katie’s Beefilicious Burgers a close sec ond. The panel of three judges presented
the winners with their prizes and were joined by Quality Standard’s “Beiefy” character to hand over the prizes and the prestigious “Young Chef Challenge” title. The lucky winners won fantastic
prizes including a half-day cooking workshop with multi-award winning chef Richard Hughes, bespoke “Young Chef Challenge” professional chef whites, signed James Martin cookery books and £200 worth of school equip ment vouchers. James Martin said: “I was delighted
to be asked to take part in the Quality Standard beef mince Young Chef Chal lenge competition. I was impressed, not only by the standard of recipes here today, but also with the enthusiasm shown by all the contestants - it was a shame we could only pick one winner!”

Generous residents rally round to finance Pauline’s treatment
UNSTINTING generosity from Ribble Valley residents means terminally-ill cancer sufferer Pauline Altham has almost enough money to pay for a second series of treatments costing £ 10,000.
Friends, relatives and local residents started
fund-raising for Mrs Altham, of Goosebutts Lane, Clitheroe, following a refusal by the NHS to pay for the drug Cetuximab. The reason given was that the National Institute for Clinical
Excellence (NICE) has not yet completed its appraisal of the drug and Mrs Altham is there fore having to find more than £40,000 a year to pay for the treatment privately. Receiving the final dose of her series of six
treatments of the drug last Tuesday, Mrs Altham (62) is now awaiting the results of a scan she underwent this week to tell her how effective
