Black-tie event boosts charity
A GLAMOROUS Mad March Ball at one of Ribble Valley’s top venues raised £1,700 for children’s charity WellChild. Organised by Natasha Shaw and friends,
the black tie event \yas staged at the Inn at Whitewell and was very well-supported. ; Live entertainment came courtesy of
local 1960s band The Backbeats, who gave an outstanding performance. Another highlight was a charity “slave
auction” with half-a-dozen willing victims - Dave Whadcock, Liz Lamer, Gavin Shaw, Wayne Murray, Natasha Shaw and Stephen Kenny - offering their services to the highest bidder. The evening proved a great success and
organiser Natasha, who will also run the London Marathon for th e Well Child Foundation, thanked everyone who sup-
. ported it. Kedge Martin, chief executive of \Vell-
Child, said: ‘“We are delighted with the money raised from this great event, which will make a real difference to the lives of sick children across the UK. WellChild is the only UK charity th a t cares for the needs of all sick children, regardless of their condition, improving treatments and cures a t hospitals across the UK and providing
much-needed support in the home with WellChild Children’s Nurses. Anyone who would like to sponsor
Natasha for her London Marathon chal lenge can ring her on 07812 051901 or visit her on the following website (www.justgiv-

MP hits out at new threat to rural public phone boxes
RIBBLE VALLEY MP Nigel Evans has hit out at th e telecom regulator which announced new rules that could see thousands of telephone boxes vanish. Calling on British Tele
com not to go ahead with the proposed measures he said: “Under new rules announced by the telecom regulator, British Telecom is now allowed to close call boxes without public con sultation as long as it leaves one remaining within a 400m. distance. “Ofcom has extended the
area from 100m. and this could allow BT to close 6,000 phone boxes without consultation if i t wishes. In rural areas such as the Rib

ble Valley, where there are often many black spots for mobile phone coverage, telephone boxes provide a vital means of communica tion especially in times of emergencies. “I have written to Ofcom
asking them to rethink this in light of what will happen if local communities lose this vital safety net. “I urge BT not to remove phone boxes in the
' Ribble Valley without public consultation as they will be removing a vital life line for the community. : “People will lose their boxes which they want but get masts in their streets which they don’t want.”

system. Alternatively, think about a shed alarm. Some can connect to your phone system and will ring out.” He added: “Secure your
bike inside the shed - think about steel cables connect-, ed to eye bolts secured on to the floor of the shed. “Security marking is the
best way of ensuring that your bike is returned to you if stolen.” Anyone with information
about the bike theft or who is concerned about their home security is asked to co n ta c t PC Wareing on 01200458711.
