Council strike on Tuesday
By Julie Magee
COUNCIL employees are gearing up for a one day strike on Tuesday in protest at what they call “unfair and unjust cuts” to their pension scheme. “At the moment i t would appear that a
number of front line services will be affect ed by the action,” said Linda Jones, Unison branch secretary at Ribble Valley Borough Council. “I’ve never known staff to feel so strongly about an issue before.” Ribble Valley Borough Council chief
- executive David Morris confirmed it was likely the council offices would be open, but would probably be staffed by senior man agement providing a skeleton service. ; He said: “For services such as housing
repairs; planning applications and building control, we might only be able to give advice and pass messages on. “Street cleansing, refuse collection, pay
ment of housing benefit are likely to be affected for one day and we apologise for that.” Ribble Valley Borough Council street
“We apologise for the inconvenience and
hope people will bear with us. We will be there to collect the waste the following
. week,” he said. He urged people to tell neighbours who
might not be aware of the changes to the Tuesday collection. Ribblesdale Swimming Pool on Edisford
Road, Clitheroe, will also be closed during the strike. However, the industrial action will not effect Clitheroe’s Tuesday market, which will go ahead. -;The management team were due to meet yesterday to discuss the council’s continu-
: ity plan. . • . - Employees will be picketing outside Rib
ble Valley Borough Council’s offices on Church Walk and the Salthill depot on
' Tuesday morning. . Miss Jones said: .“Our present retire ment age is 65. but some of us with long service can retire from 60 onwards. Their changes would remove this right for anyone now under 53.”
• She added: Some papers say we get a free pension and retire to a life of luxury. Our
scene manager Graham Jagger said th e . strike would affect all refuse collections on) Tuesday, including the first week of th e ; new wheelie bins. • ■ ‘

Clitheroe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, March 23rd, 2006 • . 3 New role for Valley vicar
A CLITHEROE ■vicar will be stepping into a new role at Blackburn Cathedral in May. The Bishop of Blackburn, the Rt Rev. Nicholas Reade, has named the Rev. Rodney Nicholson as one of two new Honorary Canons. Mr Nicholson is no stranger to making the
headlines-in June last year, to coincide with his 60 th birthday, he walked 60 miles in two • days to raise money for Christian Aid. This was not the first time he had put his feet for ward for charity. Previously he raised £1,500 after completing a 41-mile walk from Sam- • lesbury to Settle and in 2003 raised £600 after completing a 12-hour 25-mile 'walk from Whitewell to Downham. As well as being vicar of St Paul’s, Low
Moor, Mr Nicholson is also priest-in-charge of Chatbum and Downham - a role he took on in 2003. Together with the Rev. Simon Bessant, the diocesan director of mission, Mr Nicholson will be officially “collated” in a service tak ing place on May 21st, when he will assume the title Canon Nicholson and become one of 21 Honorary Canons; Said Mr Nicholson: “I was surprised by
the Bishop’s invitation, but appreciate his kindness and that of other people at this ; time. Speaking about Mr Nicholson’s appoint
ment, Bishop Reade, said: “Rodney has. spent all his ministry in the Blackburn Dio cese and made a significant contribution to . the life and work of the Church of England
in Lancashire through his quiet and sensitive work as a parish priest in very varied areas. “He is also a gifted communicator, editing
our diocesan magazine for 20 years without missing an edition, and being a valued mem ber of our diocesan Communications Com mittee.” . After graduating in 1968, Mr Nicholson
became ordained in 1972 after studying at Ridley Hall, Cambridge. . He was a curate at St Bartholomew’s in Colne until 1974 and then at St John’s' Church, Blackpool. He went on to become ■vicar of St Bartholomew’s, Blackburn, before coming to Clitheroe. ■When he took on the parishes of Chatbum.
and Downham, Mr Nicholson had to give up his role as editor of The See magazine. Dur ing his two decades in that job he travelled widely in the diocese carrying out interviews. As well as overseeing three parishes, Mr
Nicholson - who is married to Kathleen and has two children, Rachel and Richard - is chairman of the Bible Society Action Group in Clitheroe and the Children’s Society Com mittee.- A strong supporter of Christian Unity, he values greatly the work he does with Chatbum Methodist Church.. Mr Nicholson said he was very pleased
that Simon Bessant had also been appointed as an Honorary Canon: “I know him well, he: has done great work encouraging mission in the diocese and at national level. His is an excellent appointment.” Both men are mem bers of the Diocese Evangelical Fellowship. (S030605/1)
