Valley magazine, ended with the lines; “The Royal College of Music takes only between four and eight undergraduate singers a year. I know that by applying I am taking a huge risk, but the thrill of the unknown makes me even more determined and I know whatever happens, I will never lose my love of singing.” Now Jennie, who is studying for A-levels
at Westholme School, Blackburn, has received the news she was longing for. “I just can’t believe it!”, she said. “I have
always wanted to sing and this is a dream come true for me. I know there is a lot of work ahead, but I can’t wait to get started when the course begins in September.” The young singer is already well-known
in local musical circles, having notched up a string of successes at festivals across the region. She is a member of the local Arden Youth Choir, the National Youth Choir and recently appeared at the Thwaites Theatre, Blackburn, with North Star Opera in a con cert production of “Les Miserables”. In December, Jennie sang in concert with
international tenor Alfred Boe and North Star Opera at the Marine Hall, Fleetwood, and last month gave a recital at a presti gious young performers’ concert in Egre- mont, Cumbria, where was awarded a bur sary for her music studies. Jennie has singing lessons with Barrow- ford-based teacher Susan Fames, who is
thrilled with her success. She commented: “It has been a pleasure'
to teach someone as talented as Jennie. She is not only an exquisite singer, but also a
hrilliant all-round musician. “From her first lesson with me at the age
of 14, it was clear that she had a special voice. She has had to learn many different singing styles, from opera to jazz, and h^ taken any challenge in her stride. Jennie was my first student to take an exam, and now the first to go to music college special ising in singing. . “To be offered not just a place, but a
scholarship to the Royal College of Music is a real compliment to me as well as Jennie. “She has become a friend as well as a stu
dent. With all her enthusiasm, I am sure she will go far.” Even more delighted are Jennie’s parents,
Brian and Sue, who are extremely proud of their daughter and her dedication to achiev ing her goal.

www.clitheroetoday.co.uk History is made as couple exchange vows
TWO men have made histo ry, by becoming the first same-sex couple in the Kib ble Valley to exchange vows in a civil partnership cere mony. After spending more than
three decades together, Mr Ray Robinson (64) and Mr Alastair Forrest (55), of Ribchester, finally entered into the partner ship a t Clitheroe Register Office. The pair became official
partners after living together for 32 years. After the ceremo ny, accompanied by friends and
family, they enjoyed a recep tion at the Northcote31anor Hotel, Langho. The Civil Partnership Act
came into effect in December and it is believed tha t more than 700 couples throughout the country decided to register for ceremonies on tlie first day the legislation came into force. Speaking after the ceremony,
former engineer Mr Robinson said it was all about equality and about treating same sex couples the same way as other couples. He commented: “We have been together for 32 years and
it was great to be able to make a commitment in front of friends and family. “The staff and the ceremony
were superb. We had a fantastic day and feel absolutely delight ed.
“However, apart from'love
and commitment, i t ’s about security for each other and the legal implications are vitally important. “What happens if one of us
has an accident? Who would be allowed to turn off the ventila tor?
“There have been instances in the past where someone’s
gay partner has been left stand ing in the corridor. “The civil partnership proce
dure is about providing gay partners with the same rights as married couples. Gay cou ples are also part of the society and it is important to change people’s attitudes. “Things have really moved
on from when we both were young. “The law has made people
realise tha t things have changed and it is a big step for ward towards equality and fair ness.” Our picture shows Mr Robin-
