i Improving a legend Is not easy
: I .'^IVE basic requirements were W defined for the latest Mazda
-L MX5. Firstly the car would be as light as
-possible while meeting safety requirements. Next, the cockpit would accommodate two full-stature occupants with no wasted spaca The basic layout would continue with the original’s front-engine rear-wheel drive configuration with the engine
Mazda RX-8 breaks the mould E
v ery now and then, some thing arrives that breaks the mould. The Mazda RX-8 has certainly lived up to that billing.
. Here is a car that provides even
greater impetus to Mazda’s ongoing renaissance.
Four-door coupes are pretty thin
on the ground, the term practically reading like a contradiction, but this one has been carefully thought out. The rear-hinged back doors create a
pillarless profile and despite their truncated dimensions, allow easy entry and egress to and from the rear pair of seats. As anybody who knows anything
about Mazda’s RX series of cars knows, the unique selling proposi tion lies under the bonnet in the form of a compact rotary engine. With the RX-8, it comes in two guis es, one with 189 b.h.p. and another with 237 b.h.p. priced at £20,500
and £22,300 respectively. The less • powerful car has marginally more torque - 1621b/ft as opposed to • 1571b/ft - but most will pay the rela tively small premium for the addi tional 48 b.h.p. If anything, this RX-8 feels a good
deal livelier than its rest-to-60 m.p.h. showing of six seconds would sug gest. Expect to average 25.6 m.p.g. in the 189 b.h.p. version and 24.3 m.p.g. for the 237 b.h.p. car.

positioned ahead of the driver but behind the front axle for a 50:50 front to rear weight distribution. All four wheels would be attached by wishbone or multi-link suspension systems to maximise tyre perform ance, road grip and dynamic stabili ty. Finally, the chassis would provide a solid connection between the engine and the rear mounted differ ential to sharpen throttle response.
-A 160 b.h.p. 2.0-litre engine (from £16,600) and a 125 b.h.p. 1.8-litre
; unit (from £15,600) shift the MX-5 a little further upmarket compared to its predecessor, but prices are still accessible. Improving a legend isn’t easy. Fortunately, Mazda has been astute enough to refine the MX-5 where refinements were possible, but
has left the essential character unchanged.
r - . i f '/ I A new lease oMife and better all round.
. All models get a restyled nosejvith a bigger air intake, a more pronounced grille and far bigger chromed Citroen chevrons. Move round to the back of the car and there are redesigned rear light clusters that also look a whole lot sharper. The interior benefits from a rethink as well, with the bulbous design theme giv-'

spherical supermini. The styling marks a different direction with a C3-style bulbous nose allied to a far edgier, angular back end. Four engines - all borrowed from
the C3 - are offered with the C2, - though the range-topping unit is available in two distinct forms. A 61 b.h.p. 1.1-litre opens proceedings but the mid-range 75 b.h.p. 1.4-litre petrol also looks good value, priced from £8,895.
For ultimate economy, the 1.4-
litre HDi models (from £9,295) will be the first port of call, while the VTS version marks the top of the range priced from £12,095. Whichever C2 model you opt for,
you’ll find a car that maximises its use of available space very effective ly- ■ The C2 remains a very welcome
option in a market sector populated with a lot of mediocrity.

been tidied up and the materials used- both on the dash top, fascia and door pan els are all markedly improved. r Aside from the styling changes, Citroen'
has also quietly slipped a rather interest ing'^ engine into the C3 line up. It's a 110 b.h.p. 1.6-litre HDi diesel which joins the existing,70 b.hip.,1.4and 92b.h;pM;6rlitre diesel engines.-’It'a unashamedly sporty, being offered in VTR form with the same taut suspension as the petrol equivalent. With just 1,127kg to punt up the road, it’s usefully quick, getting the C3 to 60
- m.p.h. in 9.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 118 m.p.h. C3 prices start from £9,195: for the entry-level 1.1-litre version or
’-£10,445 for the 75 b.h.p. 1.4-litre petrol model, rising through 90 b.h.p. 1.4-litre SensoDrive petrol (available in economi cal Stop & Start or XTR ‘faux 4x4’ form), 110 b.h.p. 1.6-^litre petrol;found in the sporty VTR and a couple of HDi diesel variants to top out at £13,295. . Better to drive, better to sit in and with
a punchy diesel engine choice, the C3 looks good for a few years yet.
