A VILLAGE mill in Hurst Green is featuring in a new exhibition exploring the history of the North West through the keen eyes of its amateur photographers. The First Hundred Years is a fas cinating journey through the

.archives of the Lancashire and Cheshire Photographic Union, revealing its members’ enthusiasm for the worlds of science, sport and society.

' . . • / The exhibition, at the Museum

of Lancashire, reflects the dramatic industrial and social changes that have seen Lancashire transform from being one of the world’s indus trial powerhouses to a diverse, modern region with an exciting future. An illustration of the way the

region has changed is seen in “The Bobbin Mill, Hurst Green’.’ taken in 1858.

The picture shows a way of life

that has long since vanished, where Lancashire’s countryside, including

the Kibble Valley, played host to , thousands of hand loom weavers. The photograph was taken by

Roger Fenton, a “gentleman pho tographer” whose family owned many properties in Lancashire including Dutton Hall and much of Hurst Green, home of Stonyhurst College. Fenton notably created a- valuable photographic record of • the Crimean War in the spring of 1855. John McGoldrick, Curator of

social history at the Museum of Lancashire said: “The Lancashire and Cheshire Photographic Union was founded in 1905. Its existence for 100 years is testimony to the huge interest in photography in the region..

/ “We are delighted to be hosting

this important show which demon strates the great talent of our pho tographers and their interest in a wide variety of subject matter.' “ Lancastrians are always proud of their heritage and this is a great

, opportunity to see how our photog raphers have chosen to record it.” The exhibition will be comple

mented by an illustrated talk on “Amateur Photography in the North West” by David Marsh, president of the Lancashire and Cheshire Photographic Union on March 14 th at 7-30 p.m. The.Lancashire and Cheshire

Photographic Union still provides services to the hundreds of photo graphic societies in the North West, including operating an archive for the societies’ output. The First Hundred Years runs

until April 8th at the Museum of Lancashire, Stanley Street, Pre ston. For details call (01772) 534075. Opening-hours are Mon-Wed,

Friday and Saturday, 10-30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibition will be tour ing the North West until 2008. Pictured is the Bobbin Mill,
