James is revved up for next race

AN off-road racing competitor is hoping to speed up the sport’s recognition within the Ribble Valley. James Coonan (26), of

Billington, has been a member of the Northern Off Road Club for the past three years. Competing in his Land-

Rover, the former St Augus tine’s RC High School pupil has been interested in the sport since a young age, but now races once a month alongside at least 50 other vehicles at differ-

ent venues across the country. Already sponsored by Steve

Crewdson, owner of 'Whalley designer clothing store CC2 Moda, James is looking for more people who would like to

get involved in the sport as a sponsor.

Costing £200 for every race,

James admits it is an expensive hobby, so currently does all the maintenance work on his vehi cle with help from a friend. “I really enjoy it, but at pres

ent I have to manage on a limit ed budget,” he said. Supported by family and

friends, James is getting revved up for his next race on Sunday, March 19th at Finningley, near Doncaster. Anyone interested in spon

soring James can contact him on 07908697476. , Our picture shows James

Landlord’s shame at being banned

A FORMER publican was nearly three times over the legal limit when breathalysed as he drove home to West Bradford in the early hours of the morning. Blackburn magistrates heard

that Andrew Vincent Snieder and his wife had been celebrat ing after learning they had found accommodation' in Clitheroe near th e working men’s club where she had obtained work.

Snieder (49), of Millstones,

tVest Bradford, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and without insurance. After hearing that he' gave a reading of 101 against the legal limit of 35 the magistrates banned Snieder for 28 months, ordered him to do 100 hours’ communi

ty punishment and fined him £150. Mr Roger Pickles (defend

ing) said Snieder and his wife had lost their pub in West Bradford when it was closed and they were only given two hours’ notice. She had found work in Clitheroe and on the day of the incident they had been celebrating securing accommodation.

- - "It looked like there was a

turn in the road and things were about to get better for them," said Mr Pickles. "He is a publican by trade

, CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OE SERVICE

A CLITHEROE supermar ket is promoting healthy lifestyles for school children through the launch of a school sports scheme. Shoppers at Sainsburys

supermarkets will receive an Active Kids voucher for: every £10 spent with an extra voucher for every £10 spent on healthy foods such as fruit, vegetables, milk, pasta and fresh fish. Last year Ribble Valley

schools benefited from the scheme which enabled them to get equipment such as

space hoppers, skipping ropes, trampolines and crick-

"etbats. Clitheroe store manager

Mr Mark Herrington said; “The fantastic level of local response we received displays just how attractive the scheme is to Clitheroe schools.” This year the vouchers will.

be used not only for equip ment, but also coaching in unusual activities such as street-dance, keep fit and taekwondo.

warnings by phone have signed up, depriv ing themselves of a valuable chance to pre pare for a serious flood. In the areas where the En'vironment Agency offers the service, it will be writing directly to those at risk to encourage them to register with Floodline Warnings Direct. It will also be targeting flood warning

areas with adverts to drive the message home.

"We will be campaigning to get as many people to sign up for free warnings," said

Ben Lukey, the agency's flood forecasting team leader for the North West. "We can't always prevent flooding but we can prepare for it. Signing up to Floodline Warnings Direct gives people an early warning and gives them a chance to take steps to protect themselves and their property." When the Environment Agency issues a

flood warning, those who have signed up to Floqdline Warnings Direct will receive an automated message on the telephone num ber of their choice. The service is free.
