Seven reasons to be a daffodil collector

Cancer the big killer

CANCER is the UK's biggest killer. Every year it claims the lives of more than 150,000 people, with a further one million living with the disease a t any one time. Marie Curie Cancer Care is working

tirelessly for you and your loved ones by challenging the disease through its work in cancer care and research. Every year the charity provides care

to around 25,000 cancer patients and their families - entirely free of charge. In the community, high-quality

Marie Curie Nursing gives terminally ill people the choice of dying at home, supported by their families. At its 10 Marie Curie Hospices, it

actively promotes quality of life for patients and again provides much- needed support for their carers. The charity is also investigating the

causes of cancer and better ways to treat the disease at the Marie Curie Research Institute. Marie Curie adopted the daffodil

emblem in 1986 - the flower is univer sally recognised as a symbol of renew al. The daffodil is also the emblem of leading cancer charities in. Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the Irish Republic.

How the funds

will help

EVERY March hundreds of wonderful people give up a few hours of their time to be come a Marie Curie Daffodil Volunteer. Absolutely anyone can take

part in the annual Great Daf fodil Appeal. It's about making the most of the people you know, the place where you live and work and the things you love to do. The funds raised from this

year's appeal will help care for more cancer patients in their homes and make the services of

the 10 Marie Curie hospices available to all the people that need them more. So please, do your special bit

this March and make it possible to give more people the choice and dignity they deserve. A couple of hours volunteer

ing can raise more than £100 for the appeal - that's five hours of free home nursing care and emo tional support for a family affected by cancer.

As well as daffodils, there are blue plaques

A NEW advertising campaign has been launched by Marie Curie Cancer Care - based around the theme of supporting the choice to die at home. The campaign tells patients'

stories through the use of the iconic blue plaques more usually found on th e homes of th e

^famous. The advertising will run over a

four-week period and will appear on around 3,700 poster sites and in

national newspapers and maga zines. It has been timed to coincide with the Great Daffodil Appeal - the charity's biggest annual fundraising event. Director of PR and Marketing at

Marie Curie Cancer Care Chris Dainty said: “The theme for this year's advertising campaign dove tails perfectly with the charity's drive to give more patients the choice to be cared for - and die - at home.”

The advertising highlights the

importance of home to patients and families and highlights the crucial role played by Marie Curie Nurses in making it possible for people to remain in the place they feel most comfortable and secure. “Blue plaques are a strong visual

icon and in the advertising they serve as a tribute to people with cancer in the same way they might to a great scientist or a famous author. “The plaques signify that the house has played an important role
