. Centenary International Trials near Kelso in September. As well as representing a stem test pur
posely designed to promote the overall improvement of the working sheep dog, the English National Trials are also gaining increasing prominence in the public eye. Fully recognising this growth in popularity, organisers are arranging support events, including an inaugural country fair promot ing regional foods and rural crafts. The organisers also have the full support
of newly-elected president of the Interna tional Sheep Dog Society, Thomas Langton, of Lee End Farm, Quemmore, Lancaster. Like other members of his family, Mr Long- ton is a legend in the working sheep dogs world, having twice won the English Nation al Trials in 1985 and 1992 - the last time they were held a t Underley Estate - and the International Trials in 1986. While organisers are arranging a number
of fund-raising events in the countdown to the trials, opportunities remain for event sponsorship, trials field displays, trade stands and programme advertising. Interested par ties should contact either treasurer Christine Clarkson on 01756 793371 or secretary Carol Palmer on 01200 445293. The English National Trials also have a website (

offers a range of full and part-time courses where you can learn everything from basic animal care through to specialised technical knowledge to help you in careers such as veterinary nursing, animal rescue or even working in a zoo. For youngsters, the Animal Academy’s Pet Club
is a chance for children to play with different ani mals and learn more about handling and feeding
them. The Pet Club runs on the first Sunday of every month from 12-30 p.m. to 4-30 p.m. for chil dren aged five to 12 years old. Pictured are students Nicola Entwistle and Toni
