many of us aspire to, but it is not all personal trainers, private jets and plastic surgery for these celebrities. They are the envy of milUons with their designer clothes and cavernous houses, but when it comes to car insurance the glitterati are getting a raw deal. According to the UK’s leading financial
®
products research company, pop stars, foot ballers, TV personalities and the like are the least popular group of drivers with the men in grey suits at the nation’s insurance companies. Insurance providers have a list of “red
alerts”, criteria that, if you fulfil them, will mean you will be paying top dollar for motor insurance. Looking down the list though, it is reassuring to know that most of them will be able to afford it. First up you have your international jet set
and their hangers-on, people who drive flash cars and earn a fortune. Then there are the TV presenters and movie stars, anyone in show business. Further down the list are people who are
considered “moral hazards”, those who are exposed to the temptation of underhand deal ings, like gamblers and scrap metal dealers. If you are in a high-profile or dangerous job,
you will also be paying over the odds, so diplomats, embassy staff, rally drivers and wrestlers beware. Finally, people who have to rush from job to job, such as bookmakers who regularly dash between race meetings, are also on the hit list. The safest professions for insurers are desk
bound pen-pushers, like accountants and civil servants.

HAVE lost count of the number of times I have been driving in a small diesel car and paused to consider how much better the car

would be if offered with an automatic gearbox. Unfortunately, many manufactur
ers seem to think “small”, “automat ic” and “diesel” are mutually exclu sive concepts and continue to foist manual gearboxes on us. When most of these cars are used for city duties, that just makes no sense whatsoever. Therefore, my curiosity was piqued
when Renault announced i t was plumbing its clever Quickshift5 gear box into one of my favourite tots, the Modus dCi86. At this point, I should correct a small but important issue. The QuickshiftS gearbox is not an automatic at all, but then nor is it a conventional manual. A “proper” automatic car has a
torque converter, which is a hydraulic fluid coupling that replaces the clutch in a manual car. It is what makes the shifts in an automatic butter-smooth, but its inherent inefficiency makes automatic cars rather thirsty - not great for a small car. The Holy Grail that transmission
manufacturers have been striving towards is a system that offers the
Mi--' If
smoothness and convenience of a decent automatic with the efficiency, response and - when the mood takes you - the good old- fashioned fun of a manual gearbox. Some have come closer than others
to achieving th is end. R e n a u l t’s QuickshiftS is a step in the r ig h t direction. What is more, it only costs £500 over the manual option, which given that most automatic options in this class tend to be priced at around £1,000 looks good value. So what do you get? Basically a

conventional five-speed gearbox with a robotised clutch system. Should you wish, you can fhp the gear shifter across to “A” for automated mode. The dCi86 diesel power plant offers
a reasonable slug of poke and the QuickshiftS gearbox exacts no penal ty when it comes to fuel consump tion. In fact, its 62.8 m.p.g. fuel econ omy figure is even more economical than its manual sibling, and the accel eration to 60 of 13.2 seconds and the top speed of 104 m.p.g. are both use fully quick.
