..A Perfect place for a racecourse

PLANS are going ahead for a multi-mil lion pound racecourse in E a s t L an

cashire. The site, between Hyndbum and the Kib

ble Valley, is considered ideal for the purpose and well situated for motorway access and main road links serving the county. For the equestrian world, it is excellent

news and for one Gisburn stud, the timing could not be better. End House Stud has become home to Redoubtable (USA), pictured right, for his

first season at public stud. Miss Trudy Goulding, manager, said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome such a well known quality horse as Redoubtable. “The search to replace our beloved Hon-

eybrook Siren has been a long arduous task and proved almost fruitless until, through what could only be described as fate. Redoubtable found us! “We believe he is the perfect sire for top-.

class rachbrses, point-tp-pointers and polo ponies due to his superb temperament.” Redoubtable, by Grey Dawn II but of

Seattle Rockette (Seattle Slew) has fantas tic breeding, a remarkable racing history and beautiful confirmation. His champion bloodlines link him to some

GISBURN trainers Nick Saville and Carol Richardson have proved that when i t comes to healing horses, water is the key. ., Panama Sport Horses’s equine

hydrotherapy unit uses chilled saline water to drastically reduce a horse’s recovery time following an injury, operation or ailment. The veterinary profession

highly recommends the use of such treatment for tendon injuries, laminitis, strains, flesh

...wounds, hoof growth and many more conditions. “The benefits of equine

hydrotherapy have been conclu sively revealed in recent years”,

. says Carol Richardson, profes sional show jumper and partner in Panama Sport horses. “We decided to develop our

own unique unit offering the treatment at the most cost effec tive price on the market.”

Desperate farmers in protest

INCENSED leaders of the National Farmers Union (NFU) protested at the Carlisle offices of the new Rural Pay ments Agency about long-overdue farm subsidy payments. Leaders of the NFU in the North

West are demanding the immediate introduction of a system of part-pay ments for farmers still waiting for the new Single Farm Payment, in a desper ate bid to help farmers facing bank

ruptcy. When the Single Farm Payment sys

tem was introduced by the Govern ment, English farmers were assured they would not suffer in any way. According to NFU North West's

Regional Management Board Chair man, Peter Allen, the direct opposite has actually happened - English farm ers are the only people suffering because the Government adopted the most complicated system of assessing and delivering the payments. "It's the Government who should be

shouldering the blame, not just the RPA," said Mr Allen. "Farmers listened to Government in good faith and were assured that they could deliver. Farm ers approached the new system posi

tively and did everything that was asked of them. So why is it that farm ers are the only ones suffering financial ly?" Having reached the end of their teth

ers, North West NFU delegates trav elled to the RPA's offices in Carlisle to deliver a strongly worded letter of com plaint calling for immediate Govern ment action. They want the letter to be sent directly to the RPA Chief Execu tive, Mark Addison. According to the latest figures (April

4th), 57,798 claims for the Single Farm Payment have been validated by the RPA, b u t only 35,944 of those have been paid and a further 62,202 claims are still to be validated. Mr Allen, added: "Make no mistake,

this situation is dire. North West farm ers, especially those in the hills and those who are tenants, are suffering real financial hardship because of the RPA's mess. Their businesses are under threat

and they're on the back foot when com peting writh Europe, neither of which is due to any fault of their own. "We want action and we want it

now."

Rare breed pigs have a bright future in Valley

by Susan Sumner

A H ERD of ra re breed British Saddleback pigs are the star attraction a t a Ribble Valley farm. When Edward Thornber’s

pedigree pig, Katie, is ready to give birth, he warns his mother, Elizabeth: “You’d better bake, mother, the pigs are due,” as there is always a huge influx of visitors wanting to see the new-boms. Pigs, particularly of the rare

breed variety, are not a common sight in our area. Katie, pedigree name Victoria

Lottie, has recently produced her third litter since coming to the Sawley farm some 18 months ago. Pigs are prolific breeders, able to farrow five times in tv/o years. The gestation period is three months, three weeks, three days, and as Katie has always given birth to the day, it is easy to plan ahead! The 10 youngsters are three

boars and seven gilts. Edward (21), a qualified joiner,

fell in love with the rare breed when visiting the Great Yorkshire Show. He approached the pig breeder and after buying his first sow, started his Pendle herd of British Saddlebacks at the family farm. British Saddlebacks are the

result of the amalgamation of two similar breeds, the Essex and

Wessex Saddlebacks, and were founded in 1967. They are noted for their mothering qualities, which is certainly true of Katie. Each day, the pigs have a run

round the farm, but Edward has to limit the time they are outside as they root up all the ground. Edward, who is chairman of

Bolton-by-Bowland Young Farmers’ Club, is hoping to take two gilts to the Great Yorkshire Show this summer. A member of the British Sad

dleback Society, he explained: “Pedigree Saddlebacks have to have the right markings, black with a white collar. If they are well enough marked they go for breeding.” If not, they are fat

tened up to 100 kilos and sold to a butcher in Chatburn who spe cialises in locally produced, tradi tionally-bred pork. Three gilts from a previous lit

ter went to Doncaster where they are set to be a crowdpuller in a farm shop paddock. Another three were taken to Clitheroe Auction Mart’s first pig sale. Edward’s hobby has become

something of a passion for him. It is people like him who are helping save the rare breeds from extinc tion and British Saddlebacks are among those varieties classed as at risk. Looking ahead, Edward plans to increase his herd. Who knows, he may have a future champion on his hands.
