by Faiza Afzaal

FAMILY and friends of a Eibble Val ley man, who died from a rare form of leukaemia, are honouring his memory by raising £50,000 for a heart scanner.

Father-of-two Graham Gardner died

last April aged just 29 after suffering from disseminated lymphoma - a con

dition which causes tumours. Graham, of Gleneagles Drive in

Brockhall Village, worked as a lorry driver and spent the last few weeks of his life in the intensive care unit at Blackburn Royal Infirmary. Now his parents, Colin and Janice ;

Mustoe, who fostered Graham from being three, have launched a major appeal to raise £50,000 to fund a new echocardiography machine for Black- bum’s new hospital to keep his memo

ry alive. And they are calling on generous

people in the Ribble Valley to dig deep and help them meet the target. The heart scanner - most commonly

known as an Echo machine, can moni to r the heartbeat in real time using ultrasonic waves, which gives a similar image to an ultrasound scan of an

unborn baby. I t will allow doctors to- look at a

Ribchester and own office furniture business Senator International, based in Altham and Huncoat, have now reg istered the Graham Gardner Intensive Care Fund to purchase the heart scan

ner. And the fund-raising process has

already started with preparations under way for a white tie and dia monds summer ball at the Dunkenhal- gh Hotel, Clayton-le-Moors on Friday,

June 9th. . Meanwhile, Blackburn painter, Mr John Chapman has done his bit for charity by painting a picture of Black burn Royal Infirmary, which will be

auctioned on the night and is expected to fetch at least £2,000. The picture has been framed courtesy of Rainbow

Gallery in Great Harwood. Between now and June, committee

members are working extremely hard to ensure the charity spectacular runs smoothly and as much money as possi

ble is raised. One of the organisers and committee

member, Mrs Joan Egan, of King Street, Whalley, said: “Graham spent the last few weeks of his life in the

intensive care unit. “Although the doctors and nursing

staff did everything possible for him,

he lost his fight for life. “Colin and Janice spent many weeks

visiting Graham while he was in the intensive care unit, met most of the doctors and staff and on his death promised to raise funds for a piece of equipment in memory of Graham. “Most of us know of someone who

has been treated in the special unit and will understand that the best equip ment is needed for saving lives. “We have already received a number of pledges, but still require as much

support as possible.” A number of other events are also

being planned for later in the summer • including a garden party and prize auc

tions. Anyone wanting to pledge support

by donations or items to be auctioned is asked to contact Mrs Egan on 07831 118229. Our picture shows Mr Chapman

with his painting to be auctioned, along with the summer ball’s commit tee members Mrs Carole Field and Mrs Egan determined to raise £50,000 to purchase the vital piece of hospital equipment.

their diamond wedding. Mr Maurice Wilson, who was 90 in February,

met his wife, Kathleen, who will shortly be 88, when she went to work as a doctor's reception ist almost next door to where he then lived in Dewsbury. They were married at High Green Methodist

Church, near Sheffield. A lunchtime party for 15 family and friends,

IT was not tbe usual lace hankies, perfume or chocolates th a t Mrs Jacqueline Pye received on her 65th birthday. Instead, the big-hearted Ribble Valley

resident thought about others before her self and raised £720.50 to boost funds for a life-saving charity. Mrs Pye celebrated her birthday by

holding a party at the Catholic Social Club in Clitheroe. However, she requested fami ly and friends to give donations in lieu of presents to the North West Air Ambulance (NWAA). A raffle was also held on the night, which raised £300. Speaking about the generous move, the

retired nurse said: “I t is such a worthy charity and receives no Government fund ing. My husband, Harold, died last year and the air ambulance was called out to help. Although by the time the helicopter arrived it was no longer needed, it made me realise how important the service is for people living in remote rural areas like the Ribble Valley.” Mrs Pye, who lives in Whalley Road,

Billington, and has two grown-up children and six grandchildren, expressed thanks to her friends Mrs Ann Hargreaves and Mrs Anne Grundy for helping to organise the birthday party. She also thanked Clitheroe businesses for the raffle prizes. Our picture shows Mrs Violet Leech, of

the NWAA receiving the cheque from Mrs Pye (right), with friends Mrs Hargreaves and Mrs Grundy. (CR040506/1) ,• •, , , , ,

the years and is still a member of the choir at Whalley Methodist Church, which he has also served as a Sunday School teacher. He still cycles, but not as much as he used to,

he admits. Our picture shows Mr and Mrs Wilson on their wedding day 60 years ago. (s)
