always do our best THERE has been some correspon dence recently concerning local health services, and in particular, concerns raised about access to GP services at Clitheroe Health Centre. The most recent letter suggested

that patients are unable to make an advance appointment a t Clitheroe Health Centre. Most people are aware that there are

actually two independent GP prac tices based at Clitheroe Health Centre, each having its own appointment sys tem. Over three years ago, practices

across the country were encouraged by the Government to adopt more of a “same day” service, generally ensuring that patients could see a doctor within 48 hours. Both The Castle Medical Group

and Pendleside Medical Practice were early adopters of this revolutionary system, which by and large removed the long waiting times th a t had become a problem in some areas. We now find that the majority of

patients want to book an appointment on the same day that they are ill. Both practices have undertaken

patient surveys in recent years, and the overall satisfaction with the new system is extremely high - well over 90% of patients surveyed are happy with the current system. Patients of both practices, however,

are able to book ahead if they don’t wish to be seen on the day. The challenge for practices is to have

a reasonable mix of “same day” and advance bookings - typically one third of appointments each day can be pre booked, and often available at times of the day that may suit people who work, or for children at school i.e. early morning or late afternoon. We also need to take a flexible

approach to whatever system we adopt, so that we can accommodate the needs of most people. Unfortunately, we will never be able

to guarantee an appointment on the exact day or time, or with the doctor of choice, on all occasions. We are anxious tha t we do not go

back to the problems tha t we had before we introduced the new system, with long waiting times for routine appointments and vast amounts of surgery time lost due to people failing to attend, sometimes because they for got or just got better! We would very much encourage peo

ple when they telephone the practices to explain their circumstances - if patients are unable to come to the sur gery on the day, the receptionists will do their utmost to make a suitable advance appointment for patients.

Same gang causing

all the trouble? HAVING read the letter from the res ident in Highfield Road, Clitheroe, in the April 27th edition of the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times, I feel nothing but sympathy and understanding. As residents in the Primrose Ward I

can appreciate what it is like, as we too are the constant victims of vehicle damage and noise.

What do we receive

from French twin? I WAS interested in the article and picture in the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times about the “French Con nection as Good as Ever”. May I ask, through your publica

tion, of “those” responsible for this French Connection just what value the town of Clitheroe gets and who of our residents benefit? I was holidaying in the South of

France a couple of years ago and decided to make a visit to Rivesaltes and was quite dismayed not to see any sign of the “Clitheroe Connec tion” there. When I went into the Tourist

Great to see pride in St George’s flag

IT was with great delight that one witnessed the pride that loads of peo ple in Clitheroe showed by flying the flag of St George this last week or so. It appears that we in Clitheroe are

the last bastion of pride in Lan cashire of being Eiiglish arid cele brating our national hero St George, well done to all those who participat ed and organised the mounting of flags along our streets. There were of course those people

who are ashamed of being proud of being English and did not fly the

who are running riot with no regard for anyone else, but in entertaining them selves by being noisy, violent drunks causing damage as they pass by just for something to do. The article from the Mayor in the

flag, let us hope that they do so when the World Cup comes along. May I ask where were the flags on

the following places, RVBC offices, RVBC council chambers, Clitheroe Town Hall, Clitheroe Library, churches and loads of shops and busi nesses? Are you all ashamed of being Eng

lish?

We too are fed up with the minority Good for Britain? I

same edition expressed concern over the bridge between Henthorn Park and Victoria Street and the park being used as an “escape” route for the van dals. We would all appreciate a securi ty cainera installed, which might deter vandals. We have had signs erected in the

field Road, enough is enough and the only way to help alleviate the problem is to contact the police immediately and video any antisocial behaviour. Has anybody considered the possi

Primrose area s ta tin g th a t i t is a “High Visibility Police Patrol Area”, and the Primrose Ward is now an “alcohol free zone”, but still the noise and damage continues. I agree with the resident of High

bility that it is the same minority com muting between home and the park causing havoc on the way, making Henthorn and Highfield Road both ends of the problem? Are all reported incidents logged

and does anybody refer back to them checking for similarities and patterns? Maybe the costly CCTV cameras in Clitheroe should be watching people as well as vehicles.

do not think so HOW can Prime Minister Blair have th e brass neck to ta lk of “full employment” when jobless claims have now risen for 13 of the last 14 months to 1,566 million? Figures also reveal 135,000

entrants from EU accession states signed up for work here last year. How could this pathetic Labour

Government have got i t so wrong when they said we should only expect 10,000 to 12,000 in the first year. Add to the above figure the 1.2

million (official figures which can probably be doubled) migrants who have come to Britain (mainly Eng land) from outside the EU since this Labour Government came to power and I am tempted to ask these May- fair socialists “just what is your real agerida on immigration?” I t does remind me of the excuses

slave owners gave: “If we didri’t have the slaves who would do the job?” Now it is “If we didn’t have the

immigrants who else would vote for us and keep us in the luxury lifestyle we have become accustomed to?” Anyone want to buy Labour HQ?

Office, no one had even heard of Clitheroe, had any idea of where it was or what place Rivesaltes was twinned with. I do feel that since Rotary Interna

WW2 relic comes

to light by accident IT was by accident th a t a deeply lodged relic of World War Two came to light when our “Colonel M.J.” underwent an X-ray following a motoring shunt not long ago, here in Clitheroe. “It was at the height of the action

when my tank was hit by a shell,” the Colonel said. “All hell broke loose inside and stuff flew about like shrap nel.” “I suppose it ricocheted and did

you harm?”, a friend asked him. “You’re darn right it ricocheted, or

I wouldn’t be here talking to you,” drawled the Colonel. “The periscope smashed and fragments of broken glass wapped at me like a blast of buckshot. I t was taken out later in hospital... but not all of it, it seems.” Colonel M.J. served in the Royal

Tank Regiment, distinguished’in the main thrust action at Monte Cassino.

Consider our poor

Low Moor bus men I HAVE lived here close on three years now and found the Clitheroe people helpful and considerate. Could we extend our consideration

to the “Travel For All” Low Moor bus drivers? Several times each day they have

to weave an often difficult route round cars and vans which could be more thoughtfully parked. . We aren’t always lucky enough to

have a drive on which to park, but if we have, th a t’s the place to put the car(s). We do value the bus service we have, so do let’s keep it!

P. COLMAN, Kemple View, Clitheroe

No wonder people

are leaving town WE the people of Clitheroe have seen over the last years an increase in the following areas of crime: drunkenness, drugs use, racist abuse, vandalism of cars and property, thuggery. On top of this there is a lack of

pride in keeping Clitheroe tidy. Roads are now disintegrating fast

as is also the same with footpaths, add also the mess of chewing gum, dog filth, horse droppings and the petty persecution of car owners try ing to park in their own town and we have a case for being the town that is now becoming the pits of Lan cashire to live in. I t is no wonder th a t people are

now reluctant to move into Clitheroe and more and more are looking at moving away from the place. ■ It is about time that the excessive ly high rates we pay were ploughed back into this town to improve it.

NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED Why bother with a

law that is ignored? NOT only do we who walk along Bawdlands have to put up with boy racers, bu t the omnipresent one hand on wheel, one hand on tele phone brigade. On a Monday at 4-48 p.m., I saw

a lady in a black car whose registra tion I noted down, with one hand using a phone and the other being used to place a cigarette in her mouth. She ju s t had time to tu rn the

wheel as she went over the railway bridge and on into town. Why did Parliament bother wast

ing time enacting legislation which is so clearly being ignored by public and police?

annual reunion I WRITE regarding th e annual reunion of the 1st Battalion Border Regiment. This year we are mounting a sus

tained effort to locate previously serving members for the reunion tomorrow, as age is obviously reduc ing the numbers each year. Many were recruited from this

area and of course people have migrated since leaving the Army. The informal dinner/dance will be

held at The Shepherd’s Inn, Carlisle, and tickets cost £15. While we realise there is little time

left, tickets can be obtained from John Mallinson on 01228 520877 or at 7 Empire Road, Carlisle, Cum berland, CA2 SPA.
