THE jobs of up to 15 employees a t Conservatory-giant Ultraframe could be at risk, bosses revealed this week. Sales and marketing director Nick

Brown explained that the company was investigating improvements to factory processes and, as a result, the human resources department had spoken with 15 individuals. “As part of Ultraframe’s ongoing busi

ness improvement process, the company has looked at an area within the business and there may well be a small number of positions that are made redundant,” Mr Brown commented. “Ultraframe has informed the people involved that there are improvements that the company is looking to make and that this could affect them. The jobs in question are all in factory as

frame has already been notified and con sultations will remain ongoing. “As always. Ultraframe will do every

thing in its power to re-deploy any individ uals affected.” Mr Brown stressed that no final decision

had yet been made, adding th a t if any action was to be taken, it would most likely be in the second half of the calendar year. He went on to deny rumours that there

are plans for large-scale redundancies. “At this point in time, there are no plans

for a major redundancy programme. Any rumours that Ultraframe is to make large- scale redundancies are unfounded.” The company, based in Up Brooks in Clitheroe, employs around 450 people.

Mountaineers on mission

PEEBLES in the Scottish borders was the May Day weekend destination for 15 Clitheroe Mountaineers. One group travelled to Drumelzier and

followed a track tq Den Knowles Head and Pykektone Hill, which was reached via a short climb from the old Thief’s Road. Continuing along to Long Grain Knowle and Newholme Cairns Hill, the party then descended to follow the Stanhope Bum to Stanhope where they followed a path along the River Tweed back to Drumelzier. On the Sunday another party, together

with their mountain bikes, went to the Glentress forest - known by off-road cyclists for its graded trails like the runs in a ski resort. Starting from the lower car park, the group climbed steep single-track trails with tight bends to the highest point

Title goes to twins

TWINS John and David Whalley claimed the championship title with their pen of five Texel cross lambs at the. May Prime Lamb Show at Gis- bum Auction Mart. The spring lambs from

the Whalleys’ Darwen farm, weighing 38kg, sold for a staggering £102 (269p/kg) to Stephen Swales, buying on behalf of Knavesmire Butchers of York. Sponsored by PM&M

Chartered Accountants, with offices in Clitheroe, Blackburn, Burnley and

. Nelson, the show dis played some of the area’s best quality stock. In the dairy ring, the

newly calved champion heifer, at just five days old, belonged to young farmer Guy Pearson, of West Marton, and was sold to Colin Middleton, of Whal

ley, for £1,180. ■The champion in-calf

climbing started with a visit to Troy Quar ry near Haslingden. Future ventures include Wilton Quarries, Robin Proctors on Wednesday and Anglezarke Quarry on May 25th. Members meet at the council offices car park at 5-15 p.m.. For further details, ring Bern Hardman on 01254 824856 or Tony Halliwell on 01200 429396. • An indoor meeting will be held at

Workshops for children

A COMMUNITY group which.works with women from Asian heritage and other backgrounds to promote commu nity cohesion, is offering a series of creative workshops for children of all ages. The Tamanna Women and Children’s Group recently

received a grant to produce a multicultural banner involv ing children from different faith and non-faith backgrounds. ■ Thanks to the Faith Communities Development Fund,

the group is now able to offer free workshops headed by artists from Action Factory at Ribblesdale Children’s Cen tre (formerly Ribblesdale Nursery), located on Queen Street, Clitheroe. Any youngsters who want to be involved must attend one

of the initial workshops at the centre’s Raindrops Room from 1-30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Children under the age of eight must be accompanied by an adult. For further information, contact Jane on 01200 426816. The group'has been very successful and currently has 30 members. Amongst other things, it.has organised first aid and numeracy classes, with plans for children’s classes in IT and self defence in the offing. Anyone wanting to find out more about the group can log on to www.tamannagroup.org.uk

Ducks raise quacking sum WADDINGTON waddlers raised a quacking £8,578 for

two good local causes. Organisers of the Waddington Duck Race, held as part of

the annual three-day Scarecrow Festival, said a huge “Thank you” to everyone who supported the event. Hun dreds of web-footed wonders waddled their way down Waddington Brook in a series of daffy races, even ultra-posh designer ducks in an executive race, each backed by a cor porate sponsor. The money raised will be split between the village’s St Helen’s Church, and the appeal to refurbish Waddington Playing Field.
