FROM the moment of meeting the members of the Sacconi String Quartet, on Preston Railway Sta tion, both I and the chairman of the Clitheroe Concerts Society knew we were in for a wonderful evening from a dedicated se t of musicians. Our instincts were not wrong. During the concert the team

work and perfect unity of the quartet were demonstrated with lovely harmony and beautiful syn chronisation. The Haydn quartet Op. 76 No.

5, with its rather sonorous begin ning, led on with bright and exu berant playing and was a most enjoyable interpretation through out.

The second piece was the String

Quartet N o . 1 by Bela Bartok. The playing here was vigorous with many mood changes. Although the music surged and diminished, leading to many crescendos, it was never aggres sive: as the leader explained “It had soft edges”. Several members of the audience

remarked afterwards about feeling unexpectedly comfortable listen ing to Bartok. At the interval it was discovered

that it was the first time the Sac coni Quartet had played the Bar tok to someone who was alive at the time it was written in 1909. Annie Slater, a stalwart member of the society, who always sits on the

front row at concerts, celebrated her hundredth birthday in 2004. In the second half of the pro

gramme, Ludwig van Beethoven's “Rasumovsky” q u a rtet was played delightfully and the rap port between the players beauti fully demonstrated with musical phrases moved like perfect passes in a complicated ball game from player to player. Altogether a won derful concert experience. The next concert is on March

9th, by the “Rivendell Wind Quin tet” and it is important to note a change of venue, for this concert only, to the Assembly Hall, Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, at Chatburn Road, Clitheroe. ELIZABETH FOSTER.

Animal magic

THE Animals and Friends, fea turing Clitheroe-based musician Pete Barton, will play at Mitton Hall Country House Hotel later this month. The group, which has announced 2005 tour dates all over the country, will be in concert on Thursday, February 24th. The line-up will feature origi

nal Animals member John Steel, plus Micky Gallagher, Johnnie “Guitar” Williamson and Peter Barton. The group is promoting its

new album, “Live in Denmark,” recorded in Copenhagen last year featuring classic songs such as “House Of The Rising Sun”, “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place” and other hits.

Daft Dave becomes a gigolo

THEATRE fans are in for a treat when the famous Hull Truck The atre Company makes its debut in Clitheroe later this month. It will bring its latest touring pro

duction - an acclaimed new comedy called “Kissing Married Women” - to the St Mary’s Centre on Satur day, February 26th. Already playing to packed audi

ences, this hilarious and touching comedy is from Gordon Steel, the writer of “Albert Nobbs”, “Studs” and “Like a Virgin”. His latest play is about “Daft

» ■:

Dave”, who has never really had a girlfriend and for whom sex is some thing on the telly. Dave is a garden er for the council who lives with his mam. When his best mate, Micky, re-launches him as a gigolo. Daft Dave is catapulted into the hostile

world of desperate women hell-bent on a good time. With two bits of advice gleaned

from the Internet - one, not all women are pretty, and two, not all women are women - the lifelong loveable friendship of Micky and Daft Dave is yet again put to the test. To add insult to injury. Daft Dave falls hopelessly in love. Promoted by FoRCE, the Friends

group for St Mary’s Centre, this play marks a new step in the life of the town’s community and arts cen tre. If you are a FoRCE member, or

join the group now, you will get a discount on tickets. Tickets are now on sa le a t St

Mary’s Centre or through the book ing line, 01200 424217. They cost £10 or £9 concessions.
