HEN Vauxhall decided to launch a new sporty tot, there really was only one option when it came to its moniker. Vir tually everything else, however, is different.
dubbed a 2+2 coupe, the latest version is an unashamed two-seater. Its profile looks much like a Peugeot 206CC to which somebody has taken a plane and chamfered all the curves into edgy angles and gives a clue as to the car’s party piece. At the press of a but ton, the hard top folds into the boot, turning the little coupe into a full con vertible. Everybody, it seems, is getting in on the folding hard top act. Two engines are
available, both 16- valve petrol units. The 90 b.h.p. 1.4- litre version opens proceedings at £13,750 with a Sport version starting at £14,500.

Aluminium pedals, a leather-trimmed sports steer ing wheel and front fog lights are also included. A leather pack is
offered as an option with seats, head restraints and door trims finished in hide and ESP is also an option for those looking to safely explore the limits of the Tigra’s handling. Vauxhall has the

This Astra-based contender costs not much
more than the standard Astra (between £12,995 and £20,995) and there is a choice of five engines: a 99 b.h.p. 1.616v petrol, a 125 b.h.p. 1.816v petrol, a 147 b.h.p. 2.2-litre petrol,a 190 b.h.p. turbo 2.0- litre and a 2.0-litre DTi diesel developing 100 b.h.p. Recent improvements have seen the addition of an automatic gearbox for the diesel model, a new high-spec trim level option (dubbed Design), a sporty trim level (called SRi) and a useful 40:20:40 split for the second-row bench. White rear indicator lenses are the only external giveaway to the latest updated variants. The engines, how
ever, are unchanged, with arguably the pick of the bunch being the 2.2-litre 16-valve petrol unit. This pro duces a smooth band of torque, and feels relaxed and unstressed even when the Zafira is loaded.
