l l too often, we hear about innovations in car design and what we really get is moder ately incremental changes. The S40 features a number of styling touches which we have gen

effectively resembling a shrunken S60, but the cabin is a delight. The key design feature is a cen tre console that’s a softly contoured moulding fea turing supremely easy-to-use controls and fresh air behind it. The range-topping T5 model prices from £23,763. ■ These prices are around £500 more than the outgoing S40 model which seems good value, especially as optional stability control and traction control on the old car was around £1,200 and is standard on every new S40. Something tells us that BMW and Audi may get
a rather shapely dent in their revenue stream when sales of the Volvo V50 take off, as they surely will. It is about as far from antique dealer chic as its

Unlike many compact 4x4s, the Sportage is big enough to keep the spare wheel in its proper place - under the luggage bay floor - instead of mounting it on the rear tailgate. This means that the tailgate is pleas antly light to open. “The new Kia Sportage is a
more contemporary. Three engines are offered, 2.0-litre and 2.7-litre V6 petrol-powered units and a 2.0-litre diesel, all familiar to Hyundai Tucson drivers. Two equipment levels are also avail able, as is an automatic trans mission option. Buyers choose between XE and XS specifica tions a t prices starting from
£14,495. The Sportage also adopts a
few MPV-style practicality fea tures. The rear seat cushion and the backrest are a case in point, adopting Kia’s “Fold and Dive system. This is a method of cre ating a spacious, square-sided and completely flat cargo area. The front passenger seat back rest can also be folded flat to house extra long loads, and at the back there is even a flip-up rear window, which means that items can be dropped into the luggage area without having to open the tailgate. undercuts the Hyundai Tucson significantly and brings a new level of sophistication to a mar ket that was previously populat ed by some rather uninspiring products. will notice a recurrent theme. The engines tend to bo horribly ineffi cient in terms of emissions, old- fashioned technology meaning that the average Korean or Malaysian family hatchback tends to pump out the same level of emissions as a German execu
tive car. The Picanto changes all th a t, a combination of light weight and improved engineering meaning that it is a responsible citizen. Two engines are available, a 65 b.h.p. 1.1-litre unit and a 61 b.h.p. 1.0-litre power plant that emits a creditable 118g/km of car
bon dioxide. This makes it one of the cleanest petrol-engined city cars it is possible to
buy.The styling is pleasantly contempo rary too. The front end features those big
headlamps with multi-focus reflectors, as well as a trapezoid
front grille. The chunky utility styling gives the Picanto a sub stantial look. Prices start from around £5,500 and most Picantos are fitted with electric windows and mirrors with remote central locking for all four doors and the tailgate.
