Ramblers’ train ride ends with walk back
to Gargrave CLITHEROE Ramblers used the Settle to Carlisle railway for an 11-mile walk.
After driving to Gar-
grave station, they board ed the train for the TO minute journey to Long Preston, taking five and three quarter hours to return to Gargrave. Leaving the village of
Long Preston by Scaleber Lane, Ben Brown led the party of 13 along field paths, crossing Langber Lane on the west side of Bookilber Barn to reach Orms Gill Green. A coffee stop was taken
along this stretch and there was added interest as a herd of 17 sika deer were spotted grazing on Newton Moor, while a skein of about 100 geese flew over in characteristic “v” formation in a north westerly direction. Soon afterwards the
highest point of the walk was reached at High Ings Barn on Scosthrop Low Moor and then a short descent was made to Kirby Malham, passing the historic church. On leaving the village in the direction of Hanlith, the party paused to listen to the loud noise of a great spotted woodpecker “drumming”. This sound is produced
by sharp taps of the bill on a resonant dead bqugh. At one time naturalists believed that the sound was created vocally, but this has been disproved. A lunch stop was taken
on the bank of the river Aire, where grey wagtails and a dipper were seen. The Pennine Way was fol lowed via Airton to New- field Bridge, soon after which the river was left behind and a climb made onto Eshton Moor. There was time for a
minor detour to a “tumu lus”, a small circular burial mound, thought to be of neolithic origin.
Police make appeal over lost DVDs
POLICE have launched an appeal to find the own ers of a hag full of DVDs, which was found in Clitheroe earlier this week. Officers discovered the
bag containing 70 old and new DVDs abandoned in Salthill Road on Monday and despite carrying out investigations, no one has yet come forward to claim them. If anyone has lost the
DVDs they should contact Clitheroe police on 01200 443344.

Pupils’ poetry aids children’s holiday
LOWER Sixth pupils at Stonyhurst College put their creative and organisa tional skills to the test when they organised a gala evening to raise money for a holiday for disabled chil dren. The annual Poetry Banquet
- so called because of the Stonyhurst name for the Lower Sixth - was a glittering dinner enjoyed by 400 staff, parents and friends of the col lege. It raised the magnificent sum of £10,000 for the Stony hurst Children's Holiday Trust which has provided a residential holiday week for
disabled children every sum mer since 1972. The Trust is a registered charity, run by an executive of adult trustees and Sixth Form pupils, which rais es funds to finance, lead and run the residential holiday and to educate the pupils in the process of running a charity. The Poetry Banquet is run
A fisherman’s evening
AN evening is planned by the Hodder Consultative Group to bring the fisher men of the Ribble and Hodder out from their winter hibernation. The event, held annual
ly, is to raise much-needed revenue to assist this local conservation group, which is working hard to restore depleted runs of the king of all fishes - the Atlantic salmon - to the River Hodder. All proceeds from the
evening will be used to help to achieve this, bene fiting not only the salmon, but conserva tion, other wildlife and the anglers. The evening is dedicat ed to the memory of
Hugh Falkus, one of England’s most famous game anglers. One of the two speakers
will be Bill Arnold, a per sonal friend of Hugh’s from his time spent at Crag Cottage, on the banks of the River Esk, in Cumbria. Bill will relate many
personal stories and anec dotes from his days spent in the company of this colourful character, author and broadcaster - stories that are sure to bring smiles to many faces. The second speaker for
the evening will be Dafy dd Evens, the head of the Environment Agency’s fisheries section, himself a
keen and knowledgeable angler, who' will shortly be leaving these shores for a fishing trip to South America. Also on the night is the
usual raffle, with prizes donated by various angling clubs and tackle shops. There will also be the
chance for anglers to stock up with items before the new seasons begins. The event is to take
place on Wednesday at The Swallow Hotel, Sam- lesbury, starting at 7-30 p.m. Tickets cost £10 each,
payable on the door or available from Len Hart on 01942 831413.

Can anybody give volunteer a lift?
IS there anybody out there who travels from Clitheroe to Accrington at about 9 to 9-30 p.m. on Wednesday night and could offer a lift to a volunteer youth worker? Terry, a valued volunteer with
the T rinity Youth Unit, in Clitheroe, lives in Accrington and travels to work by bus. He arrives at 5-30 p.m.,but
has to leave at 7-30 p.m. to catch the last bus to Accrington, at 7- 45 p.m. The Youth Club members only
start to arrive at 7 p.m. so Terry only has half-an-hour of direct contact time with them. He hopes to progress to coun
selling work with young people, but his current travel arrange ments are not giving either the young people or himself a fair chance to get to know each other and build up a rapport. The work that Terry does will
greatly benefit Clitheroe's young people now and in the future and something as simple as a lift to Accrington will make a huge dif ference to that work. Anyone who can help should
conta ct Mrs Janet Dodd at Trinity Community Partnership on 01200 427886 or 07817 945834, or you can e-mail Janet at jan e t .d od d(g trin ityp ar t -
