Using an electric motor to augment or

temporarily replace a conventional petrol engine was a great idea. Unfortunately both cars were rather com

promised, the Honda by its “squeezed from a toothpaste tube” styling and impractical two-seater layout and the Toyota by its dull driving manners, cramped cabin and dis tinctly lacklustre lines. Much of the technology behind the first-

generation car was developed in the late nineties and, as anybody who tries to run today’s software on a computer designed in 1996 will discover, the progress of technolo gy runs apace. The latest car mirrors the original car’s

technique of being able to run on its petrol engine and then switch to exclusively elec tric operation when conditions are favourable, unlike Honda’s IMA system, which merely uses the torque of the electric motor to give a boost to the petrol engine when accelerating. Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive can also

operate in this dual mode but is a far more ambitious system that offers significantly better emissions and fuel economy perfor mance, even in a car that has now moved up in size from the Corolla to the Avensis class. Sometimes the Prius’ silent running takes a little getting used to, but under many high- density traffic situations, Prius is totally emissions-free - the only car on the market that can offer this major environmental benefit. A more powerful 50-kilowatt motor that

from £14,495, adds exactly that. The exterior styling is

h e f irs t Corolla Verso was one of the most under-rated

a good deal more dynamic, the staff at Toyota’s ED2 design centre in southern France doing a good job at giving the Verso a more pug nacious stance with far slicker detailing. The rear light cluster is particularly well executed with a trio of vertically stacked barrel-like lights that rise to form a dis tinctive shoulder that then forms the car’s window line. The shape is still reminis

cent of the original Corolla Verso but everything seems

Unlike any other Toyota interior

to have been sharpened up, as if the Verso has spent a

month at Automotive Fit Club. The wheel arches are

more defined, and the front grille and bumper are slim mer and sleeker. There’s also a definite upper and lower body to the car, helped by those distinctive shoulders which give it a far more pro gressive look. Unlike many similarly

sized rivals, the Corolla Verso can seat seven and,

uniquely in its class, all five rear seats fold down into the floor to create a totally flat loading surface. This means that you won’t

need to haul heavy seats into and out of the car if ultimate carrying capacity is required. A lot of thought has gone

into this system, the seats not only being the lightest in class but also requiring a simple one-touch operation to fold each one flat. The interior looks a good

Toyota Prius

operates at higher voltages offers 50 % more electric power than its predecessor but improvements to the aerodynamics and petrol engine mean the Prius will now accel erate to 60 m.p.h. in less than 11 seconds, peak power being rated at 113 b.h.p. Tha t is comparable with a number of

leading diesel cars but fuel economy is far in excess of what even the most parsimonious medium-range diesel can manage, the latest Prius bettering 56 m.p.g. in town. Yes, the wheels still look a little too small

but the shape will no longer mark you down as some sort of bearded eco-warrior. With split folding rear seats and a hatch

back itis even agreeably practical, the body boasting a drag coefficient of 0.26. The Prius is the first car to feature a fully

electronic “brake by wire” system. Mercedes had dabbled with this system

but Toyota offers a more sophisticated set up that allows for the brakes to recharge the battery packs under braking. Kudos to Toy ota for offering a system that may some day find its way into all cars. The innovation doesnit stop there. As well as a push-button ignition system, the Prius also features a by wire gearshift system that dispenses with the traditional floor-mounted gear lever. Instead the Prius opts for a dashboard-

mounted joystick that drivers tap back and forth to shuttle through the gears. I t ’s easy to operate, it looks funky and it

frees up a little more space inside the car. A novel electrically- operated air condi

tioning system also debuts in the Prius. Unlike conventional systems that draw

their power from the engine’s fan belt, this system can provide an uninterrupted sup ply of chilled air even when the petrol engine has shut down in favour of the elec tric motor. The Prius has corrected

almost all of its predecessor’s drawbacks. It is not only bigger, pretti

er, better built and more fun to drive, but it also sweetens the deal by being more eco nomical, more practical and cleaner to boot. This technol ogy doesn’t come cheap and even Toyota may be unwilling to push the Prius as a conspic uous loss leader. Therein lies the paradox. A car th a t appeals to those looking to save money and salve their environmental conscience shouldn’t cost the earth.

are better. As with all man ufacturers, Toyota has worked hard at getting the “door slam” sound exactly right and the combination of carefully sited hinges and clever air sealing makes the

Corolla Verso sound more

impregnable than Fort Knox when you slam the doors shut. The materials used

throughout the cabin have been thoroughly upgraded

too with a combination of metallic finishes to accentu ate the centre console. The design majors on geo

metric shapes and three- dimensional elements to render an arch like effect.

I t is quite unlike any
