MEMBERS of Gisbum WI cele­ brated the 90th anniversary of the Women's Institute movement with sparkling wine and refresh­ ments, including a celebration cake.


The party took place at Gisburn Festival Hall and the ladies raised their glasses for a toast to a successful past and to the next 90 years ahead.


Members and visitors also watched a series of films by Spell­ bound Productions, featuring the villages around the Ribble Valley.


The cake, which featured the WI logo, was baked by Mrs Sally Birkin and designed and decorat­ ed by Mrs Shaun Cole and Mrs Susan Wallbank.

BUDDING entrepreneurs looking to start their own business can attend a Busi­ ness Briefing Session.


The free events, to be held at The Printworks, in Clitheroe, have been organised by Rib­ ble Valley Enterprise Agency and run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, September 12th and September 26th.


They will include information


and advice on starting a new business, from market research to financial plan­ ning, and an overview of how the Ribble Valley Enterprise Agency can be of assistance.

Schools The children are back at school and Tesco has launched anoth­ er voucher scheme in which parents can save vouchers to help their schools get new sports equipment. They can be handed in at the schools, at St Mary's Church, or left with parents.

Entertainment The duo "Donkey Stone" performed songs, monologues and jokes at Whalley Village Hall on Sat­ urday.


The two actors, Alan St. John and Steve Morris, making a return visit, included some of their own material in their pro­ gramme with a Northern flavour.


This was the first of the new season of entertainments at the hall on the first Saturday of the month.


Returning on October 2nd will be the Free Range Theatre Co. with the drama "Duet for One".


Garden lunch A party of men from the Mary and Joseph Home in Ancoats, Manches­ ter, very much enjoyed lunch in the garden of the Eng­ lish Martyrs' R.C. Church on Thurs­ day.


Meat and potato pie from CJ's in the vil­ lage was followed by a mouth-watering selection of sweets made by parish­ ioners.


After a quiet time with prayers in church, the visitors had a tour of the Abbey before return­ ing home.


Liturgy The Children's Litur­ gy at the English Martyrs' Church resumes on Sunday at the 11 a.m. mass.


Senior Citizens The group meets on Saturdays at 6-30 for 6-45 p.m. in the Methodist Church Hall.

Lay reader The "Saturday@6" service at Whalley Parish Church has been replaced this week by the annual diocesan Readers' Licensing Service.


Among seven people receiving their licences will be Garry Peel, who was baptised at the church and has


played an important part in worship and the youth club.


Garry, who is co-ordi­ nator for the Satur- day@6 services, will be licensed to preach, assist clergy in services and help with pastoral and teaching work. He has been training for three years.


Concert A clarinet concert will be given by Whalley musician William Stafford and friends in the parish church on Sunday at 7-30 p.m.


Alpha Course An invitation is given to anyone interested in the next Alpha Course to attend a buffet supper in Whalley Primary School on Thursday, September 22nd.


The 10-week course begins the following Thursday at 7 p.m. in the school.


Sandwiches and drinks will be served, followed by a talk and big screen video and discussions in small groups about the evening's topic.


Action group There will be a meet­ ing of Whalley Christian Action Group in The Pres­ bytery, The Sands, next 'Thursday at 8 p.m.


Church tour A further tour of Whalley Parish Church will be led by the vicar, the Rev. Chris Sterry, at 7-30 p. m. on Friday. The cost is £5 including a glass of wine.


Parish Council The adoption of the bus station and the proposed public con­ veniences are among items on the agenda for tonight's meeting of Whalley Parish Council in the Methodist School at 7-30 p.m.
