IT seems that we still love our cars, despite all the expense and delays that using them often entails.


The National Travel Survey revealed that


car journeys make up 80% of the total dis­ tance travelled by the average person in this country over an average year. Furthermore, the survey showed that two-


thirds of all car trips involve only one person, and that this rises to 84% for commuting and business mileage. Other interesting facts were unearthed,


including one revealing that the average jour­ ney is only 6.7 miles long and another that 61% of our travelling time is spent at the wheel of a car. It all adds up to great news for car manu­


facturers and the petrol companies, but it looks like there will be bigger headaches in­ store for road planners and the environmen­ talist lobby.


A NEW traffic hazard has emerged in Australia, with a number of motorists taking to driving around


totally naked. This new phenomenon has the catching


nickname of 'Tooting'. Police have received scores of complaints from embarrassed motorists concerned about safety.


MANY people accept that prison is about punishment and not rehabil­ itation, as many in authority would


have us believe. The point was vividly made recently when


Arnold Haze was arrested for trying to buy a car with a forged cheque only an hour after being released from prison in Dallas, Texas, for a similar offence.

downsize, get all the luxuries you have been used to yet not pay a ridiculous price to do so? That is the thinking behind the car I am looking at here, Proton’s GEN-2 1.6 SX. All right, so you have


never heard of it, let alone seen one. So what? All you need to know is that it is affordable and that i t has been developed by Lotus.


The £9,995 SX sits above


more basic GL and GLS models (which s ta r t at £8,995), but below the £10,595 GSX variant (recognisable by its tailgate spoiler and body-coloured door mirrors and door han­ dles). Although not at the top of the GEN-2 totem then, the SX still comes with black and beige leather trim.
