50 Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, Thursday, September 8th, 2005 Locals’ big win

THE penultimate match of the East Lan cashire Open Tennis League Second Division saw Clitheroe A matched vdth Crow Wood A and the locals came out on top. This great result should seal second place in

the league. The final game of the season is at home against Whailey C on Saturday. The locals put out a strong side and came

a\ray with one of the host performances of the season.

, Roger Ravenscroft and Daniel Bush got oft

to an excellent start and easily defeated the Crow Wood first pair 6-0,6-2. After a slow start, Steve Pym and Phil Mile-

ham defeated the second pair from Burnley 6- 4,6-2 as Pym served extremely well during the match and put a\vay a lot of points with pow erful overhead smashes. The second round of rubbers was much the

same. Ravenscroft and Bush easily defeated the Crow Wood second pair 6-4,6-2 while Mile- ham and Pym continued to play well to easily beat the number one pair 6-1,6-1. Meanwhile the Junior A team maintained

their 100% record over Sunnyhurst. Andrew Hartley and Matt Hanson were far

too strong for their opponents and only dropped one game in their four sets. Not to be outdone though, Mark Higson and Jennifer Holgate also won with identical scorelines. Unfortunately the Open B Team lost 4-1 to

title contenders Blackburn Northern D. Clitheroe Tennis Club has i t ’s own club

tournament finals day this Sunday, starting at about 1 p.m. This is the culmination of a long season, with some exciting singles and doubles finals in prospect for both juniors and seniors.

Rugby victory

SkiplonRUFC......................................11 ClilhemeRUFC.................................... IT A DISJOINTED but ultimately successful outing for the town's team saw them ease past their White Rose rivals. When Clitheroe did get their act together

they showed some good power in shoving Skip- ton off their owm ball a couple of times. The first half was all Clitheroe’s and they

had soon set up a penalty tor skipper Dave Watson to slot over. Shortly afterwards the pack drove in close

and after the initial surge from Oily McEntjTe was repelled, the ensuing ruck saw Ben Graves plunge over. Watson was again on hand wnth the extras. After another Ciltheroe attack, broke down

and Skipton countered, only a brilliant cover tackle by Russ Shiels saved the day. Then, bizarrely, the home touch judge

thought too long about putting his flag up, and before he could, quick thinking Clitheroe winger James McAloonan scooped up the ball and a mazy run saw him in under the posts. With the conversion over Clitheroe were look ing good at the break. Any chance of a flowing second half for both

sides was ruined by the ref. This coupled with the draining heat caused the whole game to peter out, and despite Skipton's late rally they never looked like overhauling the locals. Clilheroe2nds ..................................... 21 Loslock Is is...........................................11 CLITHEROE'S inaugural Fairclough Homes League game proved a resounding success. In the searing September heat, a scrappy

game littered with mistakes from both sides began with Clitheroe's dynamic second row John Sharp barnstorming his way to the line \vith stand-in captain Mick Rowley easily con verting. Tliroughout the first half Clitheroe piled on

the pressure despite. But pressure aside, if the Cavaliers had

adopted a more settled style of play the points margin could have been tar greater. The pack dominated the ruck areas and the

scrum, taking several against the head. Veteran front rower Andrew’ Thomber was

prominent throughout the game and Number Eight John Ashworth troubled the Lostock defence with his mazy running. Adding to these great performances was John Sharp who broke through twice more to seal a first half hat-trick and bag the man-of-the-match award. Lostock responded in the second half by

pressurising Clitheroe for sustained periods and coming away with points on occasion. However, the game was sealed with the try

of the match, scored by the youngster Ricky Pallister. Following a Clitheroe scrum on their 22-yard line, the ball was spun wide leaving Pallister to swat away two defenders before sprinting effortlessly to the line. B Sunday marlcs the start of the new rugby

season for Clitheroe Buccaneers. All youngsters, girls from Under 7 to Under

13 and boys from Under 7 to Under 16, are wel come to join in both the training sessions and match fixtures which will take place each Sun day at the club’s Littlemoor Road ground. Registration is at 10-15 a.m. with the hour-

mouthguard and must have a parent with them prior to the first session in order to com plete the RFU registration forms, for which two passport-sized photographs are required. Clayton Park Bakery have again kindly

agreed to sponsor the team’s shirts which will be available at the subsidised price of £15. Membership fee for the whole season remains at £15 as do the weekly subs of £1. For more information contact Declan

Players needed

CLITHEROE Ladies Hockey Club have recruited many new members over the summer and have a second team for the forthcoming season, but are looking for more members. On &turday the club is playing in a pre-sea

son friendly at Ribblesdale School pitch from noon against Springfields of Preston. Supporters are welcome, and anyone inter ested in playing should come along.

Out-Standen!

LLOYD Standen scored a hat trick for Read- stone United Under 12s Yellow in their 6-0 vic tory over Brierfield Celtic Red. Further goals from Nick Kelly, Lewis Webster and Raees Bleasdale sealed the win. That followed a d-'I win over Brierfield Celtic

Blue, with a second treble from Standen added to by Webster and Bleasdale. However, they were then beaten 6-3 by

Clitheroe Wolves, despite goals from Daniel Martin, Bleasdale and Standen. Meanwhile, the Under 13s Girls’ first game

of the season saw them record an e.\cellent 5-1 \ictory over Clitheroe Wolves. The goal scorers w'ere Sophie Hindle (2),

Gabby Preugsehat, Simone Swallow and play er of the match Natalie Cassidy. The previous week the girls had a friendly

drawing 3-3 with Wilpshire Wanderers, with goals from Hindle (2), and Alisha Cryer.

Wolves out

THE unavailability of four first team players proved too much of a handicap for the Clitheroe Wolves Under 13s as they suffered an early cup exit against Briercliffe Rovers. After a promising start when the locals w’ere

unfortunate to have a goal disallowed, the Briercliffe dominated. The Wolves held out well until half-time but after the break, they were rarely seen as an attacking force. Three quick goals in the second halfputthe

match well out of their reach but the play- eis were grateful to an excellent exhibition of goalkeeping from McGrath who saved the team on many occasions and won the man- of-the-match award.

Whailey win

WHALLEY Juniors Under 13s kicked off the season with a 2-1 win over Lammack. The first halt was even and Whailey did

have the ball in the net only to have it disal lowed. Lammack scored a tine goal early in the sec

ond half, but Whailey equalised as David Ast- ley’s through ball was converted by Peter Hogan. Whailey then had to endure 15 minutes of

pressure before Astley was again the pro\ider as Jack Ryden slotted home the winner. The Under 16s Pumas’ new season opened

with a 4-<l draw against Langho. A defensive blunder gifted Langho a dream

start in the first minute but the Pumas fought back and equalised through Alex Riley, but Langho struck again with virtually'the last kick of the first half. The second period began with early Langho

pressure but Whailey found another equaliser through Chris Hawra. Langho responded well and struck twice to make the score 4-2. Jamie Price’s free kick pulled one back,

before Ahsan Iqbal was crudely brought down and man of the match, Simon Cowgill, coolly fired home the spot kick.
