FOR hundreds of Ribbie Valley school pupils, the wait was final ly over this week as they received their GCSE results. • For many it marked the culmina

tion of months of hard work and study. Across the Valley many pupils

enjoyed academic success, with many fantastic individual perfor mances. At Bowland High School, star

pupils included Jessica Finn, who was awarded five As and four A*s, and Katy Osborn, who achieved three As and six A*s. The Hamoum twins, Nassim and

Djebrine - who is known as Jazz - notched up almost identical grades, with just their mathematics achieve ments differing by one grade. Ms Glynne Ward, the headteacher

at Ribblesdale High School Technol- ogy College, said she was “very pleased” with the exam success enjoyed hy students at her school. She said: “We are very pleased

with this year’s GCSE results in relation to the ability of pupils. There were some excellent individual achievements, for example one girl gained 10 A*s and one A, and 74 pupils gained 10 or more A to C grades, which is wonderful.” The girl referred to by Ms Ward

was Nina Thenagaran. Emily Thornber’s GCSE perfor

mance was among the best at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School. Emily gained A’*s across the board in 10 different subject areas. Also enjoying great success was

Jonathan Simmonite who achieved nine A*s and one A grade. Many other CRGS pupils gained A and A* grades in all their subject areas. The majority of pupils at St

Augustine’s RC High School met or surpassed the expectations of their teachers. Headteacher Mr Anthony McNa

mara said: “We had many outstand ing individual achievements this year, with several pupils sweeping the hoard with A* and A grades. “There was a lovely atmosphere in

school on the morning the results came out with pupils and parents celebrating hard-earned success after months of concentrated study. “Although our overall results this

year are again above the national average, they are, as anticipated, down in comparison to 2003 when we broke all previous records. “In a non-selective school such as

ours, fluctuations such as these inevitably happen. Nevertheless, the majority of our pupils have met or surpassed the expectations they and we had for them and we are delight ed with their achievements.”

Intermediate Level, 14 pulled off the highest possible grade of B and two achieved a grade C. Several of those sitting the exam are

Business group offers advice on career options

A BUSINESS lobby group is urging young people who have just received their GCSE results to start thinking “long and hard” about their careers - rather than automat ically taking the route to university. The Forum of Private Business Chief

Executive Nick Goulding said FPB research revealed 71% of businesses believed the Government’s target of send ing 50% of school leavers to university would be of little help to their business. "For a great many young people receiv

ing results, going straight into the world of work now or after taking A-Ievels is a far better career move both financially and professionally than going to university,” said Mr Goulding. "Young people must realise the hard

financial pressures that now come with a university career - with today's graduates leaving with an average debt of £16,000.

Moreover, business is becoming increas

ingly frustrated with the lack of skills grad uates have. Frankly, there are too many irrelevant courses which give graduates no training to do a job." Mr Goulding said that for pupils leaving

school today there is great reason for opti mism. "There are many opportunities out there

for young people who want to learn a skill and build a sound financial future for themselves,” he said. "Small businesses need young people

who will become the entrepreneurs and skilled workers of the future." The forum was formed in 1977 and is a

pressure group fighting on behalf of private businesses. It represents 25,000 members employing in excess of 600,000 people and is a powerful lobbying voice in both the UK and Brussels.
