Going with the grain is worth all the effort!
WOODEN floors are all the rage at the moment and although ripping up the carpet and going “ au naturel” can be quite a laborious project, the results are well worth the effort. A rushed job means it's likely to
turn out less than perfect, so set aside plenty of time to get it done and make sure the day will be free from interruptions. Hammer in or nail-punch any nail
heads that are sticking out of the wood before you begin. Double check in case you've missed any. Sanding creates an awful lot of dust
so seal off the door to the room you're • working on and, if possible, get some one on the other side to seal the door with plastic bags or something simi lar.
Open as many windows as you can
to keep the room ventilated and always remember to wear a dust mask. Ask your hire shop for advice
on using the sander and which grade sanding belts are best for your needs. Sanding from the outside of the
room in towards the middle is the best way to go. Begin at the edges of the room and work along the length of the floorboards. Stay away from the skirting boards to avoid damaging them, then repeat the sanding with medium and then fine sanding belts. Use an edge sander to strip the
remaining narrow border round the edges, right up to the skirting boards, doing your best to avoid any paint work. You may wish to finish off with
sanding blocks down on your hands and knees to get into the comers and, any nooks and crannies. Once you're happy that the floor
surface is even and smooth, vacuum the whole room several times and wipe the wood down with a damp cloth. Leave it to dry thoroughly. A top .tip is to keep the dust created by the sanding then mix it with clear
filler to give you the perfect colour match for filling in any gaps between the boards. Varnishes fall into two basic groups
- water-based and polyurethane. Water-based products are the most hassle-free as they dry quickly, are easy to use, have a low odour, are environmenf^y friendly and non-yel lowing. Water will wash your brushes clean. Polyurethane and solvent-based
products on the other hand take 16-24 hours to dry, have a strong smell, need to be cleaned up with white spirit, and can yellow with age. Polyurethane varnish is usually, slightly harder wearing. Whichever type of varnish you opt
for, ensure it is suitable for use on floors. First, seal the bare wood with a coat of diluted varnish thinned according to the manufacturer's instructions. Allow this to dry thor oughly then apply a further two coats of undiluted varnish.
