TV star to join in charity run
run in Clitheroe on Sunday. The star of “Brookside” and “Mersey-
ACTOR and celebrity John McArdle will take part in a charity sponsored
beat” will join around 100 others lining up at Roefield Leisure Centre, Clitheroe, for the start of a 10-kilometre run in aid of Cystic Fibrosis. Organisers Gail Bailey and Aimie Hamer
also announced this week that Blackburn Rovers player Paul Gallagher would get the run under way. They stress that you do not need to be
superfit to join in, as it is a relatively short distance which participants can take at their own pace. However, two superfit local athletes will
give the event an extra dimension, by set ting their own gruelling challenges. Tony Rodia, manager at Roefield Leisure Cen
W e s tm in s te r i i,w Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans. Keep EU out of Olympics!
LIKE many of you no doubt, I had great pride when I saw British athletes winning Olympic medals in Athens. My pride swelled somewhat as I witnessed the same athletes associat ing their success with our country. I witnessed Kelly Holmes
win two gold medals, even though she had previously been dogged by persistent injuries. She wrapped her self in the Union Flag and her family, friends and com patriots felt part of her suc cess and shared in her win. Amir Khan, the Bolton
lad, boxed his slight IV years of experience into an Olympic final and dis played enormous guts in getting the silver medal. He further showed enormous wisdom in telling the world that he aimed to stay an amateur and get the gold in Beijing in four years time. His family revelled in the
Union Flag, with his dad sporting a Union Flag waistcoat. Amir’s smile was infectious and his enthusi asm for the future sponta neous and focussed. Many of you will know
that few people walking this earth are more Eurosceptic than me. I have always believed that the Europe we voted for in 1975 was a trading bloc and nothing more. I was more than irritated
to read that following the success of our athletes and those of other European Union countries th a t Romano Prodi, the outgo ing EU President, wanted to see our sportsmen and women carrying the EU flag at the next games in
2008. How absurd! Why should anyone want to carry an emblem of a trad ing bloc? Why would any one want to associate sport ing success with that of a trading convenience? Sadly for the deluded
Prodi, he believes that this bloc is a country like the US. Even though Europe had nothing to do with the training of our athletes, he wants to see the EU flag displayed at all occasions, like the Stars and Stripes. He misses one very
important
fact. The US is a federal arrangement of 50 states. The EU is a union of 25 independent sovereign nation states, i.e. countries. Displaying the EU flag would be as absurd as dis playing the flag of NAFTA, or ASEAN, trading blocs of other groups of countries. I have written to the PM,
asking him to reject this idea. I do not want the EU to become a country. I want the EU to concentrate on ensuring that its members are able to trade all their goods without barriers or tax levies placed upon them. I want it to concen tra te on cleaning up the EU’s internal corruption and absurdly high costs of doing everything. I want it to slim itself down and to get out of our daily lives. I want it to wake up and smell the coffee. For Kelly and Amir, and
the many thousands of hopefuls in our country who want the facilities in which they can train to be Olympic champions in the future, ridding ourselves of the unnecessary bureaucra cy and cheating that is tol
erated within Europe could be part of the answer. The UK pays more into
Europe than it gets out. If we were to cut out the waste and corruption, then the money saved could be returned back to us. This money could be invested into sporting facilities for the young. We could get more swimming pools and save the school playing fields that are under threat. We might also help to
create a generation of fit young people. The Prime Minister states he wants, to encourage us to combat obesity, and keeping fit is certainly one way of doing it.
Is it not about time we
introduced some common- sense into our politics and stopped allowing the likes of Prodi and his chums to believe that there is even the slightest possibility that theEU could at some stage be a fully federated country. I am proud to be British
and Welsh, and I am proud to be a citizen of the world who wants to see us do more to eradicate poverty and sickness. I am not proud of my
trading bloc which wastes money, is bloated by huge bureaucracy and has pre tensions way above its shoe size. The Olympic ideal is one
of purity, honesty, endeav our and dedication. It is one of being proud to play one’s part. I can think of no insti tution which lives less to those wonderful ideals than the EU. Let i t stay out of the
Olympics - it quite simply is not its to mess around with.
tre, will ride 100 miles on his bike during the sponsored event, while Mark Bateman will tackle a tough triathlon. This will involve a 4,000-metre row, 112-mile cycle ride and a full 26-mile marathon run. As if that was not tough enough, Mark

to match the first £1,200 he raises in spon sorship through the Railtrack Charities Aid Foundation. Anyone wanting to take part in the 10k
run or sponsor others can contact Roefield Leisure Centre on 0120() 442188 or Gail Bailey a t Pure Health and Beauty on 01200 442430. Those already entered, or wanting to enter, need to register on Sun day by 12-15 p.m. at Roefield Leisure Cen tre in order to start the run at 1 p.m.
