of some 385 warrants is an impres sive result. Lancashire Constabu lary is continuing its crackdown on failing-to-appear warrants with many being executed on the same day as they are issued. Insp. John Clucas said: “In the

“At the beginning of July, 2003,
there were 1,528 outstanding fail-to- appear warrants and a t th a t time we set ourselves a target of no more than 700 a month. Radio ‘voice’ is new chaplain
by Vivien Meath
A WELL-KNOWN “voice” in Lancashire has been appointed chaplain and Father Superior at Stonyhurst College. F r Denis Blackledge SJ,
has been resident at Stony hurst for several months, but he takes up the role in September. His voice will be familiar
to listeners of "The New Day" on Radio Lancashire a t 6 a.m. on a Sunday. He has presented the hour-long programme, which is a mix of classical, choral and inspi rational music, spiced up with a little spiritu^ chatter, for six years. He has con tributed to Radio Lancashire programmes since 1988. . He has also, on numerous
occasions, said Mass and led mini acts of worship on Grana,da TV’s "My Favourite H3rmns". Ft Blackledge has worked in a variety of ministries in
ber of booklets in the Living Lord series. D u rin g four months in
S o u th America visiting J e su i t communities in Guyana, Peru, Chile, Brazil and Paraguay, he swam reg ularly in a piranha-infested river. “I t was the only way to
parishes in Edinburgh, Pre ston, Merseyside, as Superi or a t Osterley in London and, most recently, in Black pool. He has also worked with
the media in the North West as Communications Officer for the Diocese of Lancaster. Brought up in Clayton
Green, Fr Blackledge joined the Society of Jesus and took his first vows a t the age of 20. He studied for degrees in philosophy, classics and the ology at Heythrop College, London, Campion Hall, Oxford, and in Rome. He is the author of a num
keep cool, but I didn’t know ab o u t the piranhas a t the time,” said Fr Blackledge. Now his more common inter es ts are swimming, seashores, mountains, classi cal music and steam trains. F r Blackledge replaces FV
Matthew Power SJ, who will begin the next stage of his studies as a Jesuit - his ter- tianship - in Australia, in January 2005. In the meantime, he will
be continuing his association with Stonyhurst by accom panying the college's pilgrim ages to Lourdes and Com- postella in the autumn and, hopefully, undertaking a sponsored bike ride through central Europe.

A test for new waterproofs
PARTS of the Ribble Valley were under five feet of water, but that did not deter one of Britain's leading suppliers of spe cialist outdoor adventure clothing from its annual team walk. While res id en ts of several villages
coped with th e a f te rm a th of F r id a y floods, staff from Craghoppers decided it was the perfect time to put their bes t waterproofs to the test. The company's original plan was to test
sun-protective solardry shorts and T- shirts and mosquito and insect repellent convertable lightweight clothing. Instead, waterproofs, overtrousers and DRI-Pac rucksacks were the order of the day. The grey skies and the wet and windy
journey up the M6 from their Manch ester offices did not deter them or leave the Craghoppers team with too many soggy sandwiches as a wonderful lunch was enjoyed a t the Bailey Arms in Hurst Green. Mr Robert Bruce, product manager,
said: “For many this was the first chance to try out our gear in truly foul weather so we probably learnt a lot more about our products than if the weather had been glorious sunshine.” The tour took the Craghoppers walkers
around the River Ribble up to H u rs t Green and Stonyhurst College and then back along the Dinckley footbridge for a hair-raising crossing. P a r ts of th e main public fo o tp ath
looked like footstreams, but vrith maps supplied by WhaUey's Craghoppers stock ist “Warm and Dry,” the wet weather did not deter them.

Warm, sunny day
out for Naturalists IT was a warm, sunny day for Clitheroe N a tu ra l is ts ’ most recent walk to Horton-in-Ribblesdale. On leaving the village, the p ar ty
crossed the Settle to Carlisle railway and se t off up th e lower slopes of Ingleborough, taking the Austwick path on to Moughton, past wet stone spring into Crommock Dale, with Moughton Scar looking impressive in the sunshine. Lunch was tak en a t the head of
Crommock Dale, after which the track down the dale was followed. Many wheatears were seen on the walls and ravens flew overhead. At the Clapper Bridge-over Austwick Beck, Crom mock Lane was followed until the path to Norber was taken. Then the group went across Robin Procter Scar and down to T hw aite Lane, this track being followed to Clapham Scar. More than 60 different plants and
flowers were recorded, including Dev ils Bit Scabious, a clump of white and the rare green spleenworth which was spotted in a grike on Moughton.
