Club reports on a

good year at AGM AT last week’s well-attended annual meeting of the Ribblesdale Camera Club, chairman Stephen Robinson reported a good year. . Almost all the lecturers had been excellent -

although one forgot to arrive, the improvised meeting was probably equally enjoyable. An interesting aspect of the year was the

generally high standard of competitions and the success, of relative newcomers to the club. However, one or two people tried the club

but did not continue. Their views were wel come, as improvements were always sought. Secretary Ken Geddes said that the reports

- of club meetings in the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times were very well received, far beyond its own membership.

. , Treasurer John Bradley reported th a t

finances were stable but owning its own premises meant that significant unplanned expenditure could always arise for the club. Investigation of possible Lottery money for updating of specific equipment was under way, other clubs having been successful. Sub scriptions would continue unchanged, for the second successive year. Joanna Creighton said' that competitions

were well-supported and were a good way of seeing members’work. The current officers continue unchanged

except that Jeff Cowling takes over as vice- chairman. The summer programme will contain a few

full-day trips as well as the usual,Tuesday evenings. Workshops will be run on portrai ture, presentation of albums and slide shows, camera basics and mounting prints. New members are always welcome at the

club’s Chatburn. clubroom on any Tuesday evening from September. For the summer pro gramme, information is available from secre tary Ken Geddes on 01200 423474.

Experts warn that yo-yo ball craze could threaten children’s lives

OFFICERS from Lancashire Trading Standards are alert ing the public and retailers to the potential hazards posed by the la te s t craze, yo-yo ball toys.

' - v . The toys consist of a brightly-

coloured, liquid-filled rubber ball a tta ch ed to a s tre tch y rubber cord. They are typically sold for £1 to

£ 2. The Trading Standards Service

has been advised of several inci dents throughout the UK includ ing one in Lancashire. These toys have nearly strangled children a f te r the cords have

become wrapped around their necks. The liquid-filled ball is thrown.

and returned by the elastic cord, which stretches very thinly without breaking. If the yo-yo ball is swung about

the head, the cord can wind tightly around the neck arid throat present ing a potential strangulation haz ard. ■ Examples of the toy. have beeri examined by a paediatric safety con sultant who concluded they were clearly a hazard. Lancashire Trading Standards

Officers have contacted importers,. who are taking steps to remove the toys from sale.

They strongly advise parents to

consider taking the toys away from children and are recommending that retailers also take them off sale or face potential legal action. ■ Lancashire County Council’s.

Cabinet Member for Public Protec tion and Rural Affairs, County Coun. Doreen Pollitt, said: “The safety of children is of the utmost importance. “These toys pose a clear risk of

strarigulation.and parents should take steps to prevent their children playing with them.

. ' “Retailers should act responsibly

and ensure stocks of the toy are removed from sale.” .
