Second string’s solid victory
.CLITHEROE’S second string saw off Padi ham at Chatbum Road, as the locals enjoyed a 39-run victory.

, After Clitheroe posted 229-7, the Arbories side could only muster 190-7, handing the

Nawaz in the runs as
RIBBLESDALE Wanderers got the season off to a highly promising start with victory at home to fancied Bax- enden. Professional Shahid Nawaz was
instantly in the groove as the prolific runmaker hit an unbeaten 97 to help guide the Church Meadow side to a five-wicket win. Baxenden had won the toss and
elected to bat, opening with danger ous professional Jon Harvey and David Usher. A steady start was made against
Baxenden faltering at 56-4. But number three bat Mark Rish
ton was the cornerstone of the visi tors’ innings with his unbeaten 85, steadying the ship with a 60-run partnership with Simon Payne, who became Howard’s second victim, to a sharp stumping from Peel, who then had Holroyd stumped two overs later. Rishton, helped by Peter Usher,
who stuck around to score 30 before succumbing to Nawaz, saw Baxenden close on 173-6. . Wanderers were slightly disap
tight bowling, especially from Ian Britcliffe, who conceded only two runs off his first seven overs. But the breakthrough came in the ly below par.

Ryan Gladwin played his aggres
sive game, driving and pulled confi dently before nicking one behind off Harvey for 15. Howard put together an important
partnership with Nawaz, worth the best part of half a century, during which time Nawaz brought up his 50. Howard, who looked back to his
best, driving anything full of length with the minimum of effort, was then bowled by Bones for 23, and Martin Briggs could only make two before becoming Bones’ third victim. But Nawaz and Craig Hall, who
hit an unbeaten six, comfortably saw Wanderers home inside 39 overs. This was an impressive victory,
considering Baxenden’s strength in depth in their batting line-up, and Wanderers will be encouraged ahead of their derby at Station Road
