Soul/Rhythm & Blues Review
pher- Isherwood’s au to b io g raph ical “Berlin S to r ie s” focuses on singer-dancer Sally
: Bowles!'played by, Minnelli, at the 'K i t K a t Club - a place where virtually anything goes. : While the decadent partygo- ers of 1930s Berlin experiment with song, dance and all man ner of sexual couplings, their country is going to rack and ru in as th e Nazis tu rn th e c i ty ’s s tre e ts in to a violent arena of hate crimes and polit ical propaganda. C o n tra s tin g th e perverse
stage: show w ith th e te r ro r engulfing the s tre e ts , Fosse turns “Cabaret” into a dark, yet gaudy, snapshot of an era of th e relentle s s p u r su i t of pleasure. ;
^ As the sexy, but none-too-
bright singer, Minnelli domi n a te s th e stage, squeezing Michael 'York’s shy gay English man out of the frame and only meeting her match in Joel Grey’s overblown and completely unfor gettable Master of Ceremonies. - Show stopping songs include “Money, Money”, “Mein Herr” and “Cabaret”. The refurbishment is planned
for the auditorium and adjacent rooms. ■ While cinema provision will continue until the end of the year, the venue intends to offer more exhibition and perfor mance space for local schools and groups to use.

I WILL travel far to catch a David Mamet play. I have become a fan of this leading, Pulitzer prize-winning American playwright and screen writer. He is famous for his com
plex male characters (Amer ican Buffalo and Glengarry Glen Ross) but in “Boston Marriage” he has taken the bold step of creating an all female play, a three-hander. Anna (Vmen Parry) and
Claire (Rebecca Charles) are two sharp-tongued, scheming women who live by their wits with their maid (Kellie Shirley). “A Boston Marriage” was
a term used in the 19th cen tury to describe a very close

“Game of Love’’ and “Um Um Um Um Um Um” and Barry Ryan with his mas sive hit “Eloise.” This year is the
Searchers’ 40th year in the business. Their name was
. synonymous with Mersey- beat in the 1960s. In 1961, Dave Dee
formed the quintet known as Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich. 'The band had its f irs t h i t in 1966 with “Hold Tight” and fol lowed this with 12 more major c h a r t singles dis banding in 1968. Barry Ryan and his twin
brother, Paul, had a string of h its in th e la te 60s including “Don’t Bring Me Your Heartaches” and “I Love Her”.
Journey worth the making
friendship between two, usually co-habiting women as a deliberate alternative to marriage. Any sexual ele ments may or may not have eidsted. This play, set in the past,
has contemporary reso nance and, although it focuses on three women, it has much to say about human relationships of all kinds. I t is well acted, well
staged and directed, but I was most impressed by the dialogue, the clever witty exchanges that reveal and conceal feelings. However, it is all done with such clever humour, reinforced by the performances, notably by Vivien Parry who has most of the best lines, make this an amusing thought-pro voking evening.
