CHURCHGOERS at West Bradford decided for the first time to hold an Easter fair to raise much-needed money for church funds. Saturday’s event was

so successful, said deputy churchwarden Mrs Jean Chew, that it will probably become an annual event. At the end of a busy

day in the grounds of the church and in the Sunday school hall, the organisers realised a profit of £555. Attractions included

a brac-a-brac stall, cake stall, green and yellow stall, a “jarola”, a raffle, and refresh ments in the hall. In our picture,

church members admire the Easter bon net worn by Mrs Joyce Greenwood. (K190403/4)

schools in the Blackburn area are concerned at proposals to reduce place numbers. Protest, meetings and a petition have been organised. ■ The cut is suggested by Lancashire Coun

ty Council, m line with government policy. I t means that some special needs children

will have to be placed m mainstream schools. Most parents are against this and Ribble Val ley ones have joined others in protesting about the move. '-/ They fear that the youngsters will be bul

lied; and say that experience shows educa tional progress is much below that achieved in special schools:

‘"■Now some parents at least have been sur prised’that the county council has told the Advertiser, and Times that, if the plans are implemented, it will not be for some years. -

They thought the mainstream move would

take place soon. ■ But the county council says th a t it will affect the children of the future and not cur rent children. A spokesman said that the decision would

be made in June and councillors would take into account all views expressed. The current proposal would cut the number of special school places m the county as a whole by 400, with about 30 less for Ribble Valley children. ■ The Government’s policy was attacked by

delegates to the National Union of Teachers’ conference. They emphasised that there were enough problems m schools already and hav ing to deal with special needs children made them worse for all concerned. Local parents are now taking up the tim

ing of the place reductions with the county council. They want to know why the situa tion was not made clearer to them.

Villagers ret life-saving

R E S ID EN T S in two neighbour ing Ribble Valley villages have responded quickly to an appeal to set up a life saving organisation. In only three months

23 volunteers have come forward in Read and Simonstone and they have all been trained so th a t they can go on the streets and save lives. The Community First

Responder team is part of the Heart of Lancashire Appeal, a group which is dedicated to act as an emergency back-up for the community. Local co-ordinator Mr

Matthew Woods said: “The first eight minutes after someone has suf fered a suspected heart attack are vital. The vic tim’s chances of survival drop-by 10% as each minute goes by, so getting help quickly can be a matter between life and death.” He said the volunteers
