Carlo on the move

FORMER Clitheroe FC keeper Carlo Nash last

week completed a switch to Middlesbrough. The 29-year-old, who

left Shawbridge for Crys tal Palace in 199G for £35,000, made the move from Manchester City for a nominal fee. Nash, who has also

played for Stockport County, was on the bench as Boro kicked off the Premiership campaign with a 3-2 defeat at Ful ham. He was disappointed to

leave City after making 41 appearances for the Blues, including 25 as they were promoted back to the Premiership in 2002. He felt no matter how

well he played, boss Kevin Keegan was always going to select David Seaman, and Peter Schmeichel before him, as first-choice: “I wouldn’t have left if I had thought there was a future for me at City. “I don’t mind a fight

for my place with anyone, as long as it is a fair one, but for the last two years it hasn’t been. “I went in to see Kevin

at the beginning of pre season just to find out where I stood. “He didn’t really com

mit himself, so I just car ried on and had probably the most enjoyable pre season ever. “Then the manager

told me the club had accepted an offer for me from Middlesbrough. “Once I went up and

spoke to them, I decided to sign.”

Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, August 21 st, 2003 39 Kula- shaker for Clitheroe

CLITHEROE’S hopes of a Lan cashire Cup place are fading fast after another defeat - this time at struggling Bamoldswick. Host professional Jeevantha

Kulatunga did the damage alongside skipper Michael Scoth em, as the pair won the match on their own. After winning the toss and

electing to bat, Clitheroe made a steady start, before Neil Bolton was caught behind by Ian Scoth em off Sid Sheraz for seven in the

10th over.. Michael Scothern came on to

bowl the next over, and walked away with the wickets of Mark Gillespie (20) and Pete Dibb (0). Simon Bishop could only man

age two runs from 29 alls before he fell leg before to Michael Scothern for two, before the Coulter brothers of Simon (5) and Matthew (6) fell to Jon Pick up and James Stead respectively. That left Clitheroe reeling at 64-5, but with Mark Bolton still

at the Crease,, they managed to

rally towards a respectable tar get. Paul Gaskell managed 16

before he was run out, with Ainsworth finishing unbeaten on 18 to keep their hopes alive. But their efforts were to be in

vain thanks to the partnership of the host skipper and paid man, as Clitheroe eventually succumbed by eight wickets. However, things were looking up early on when Michael’s

brother Ian was caught behind by Simon Coulter off Mark Har greaves for a single. But with that wicket arriving

on nine, the incoming partner ship put on 79 before the captain fell clean-bowled to Andrew Ainsworth for 40, to leave the pro with the job of wrapping up pro ceedings. Even with Pickup supporting

him, the Sri-Lankan cracked an unbeaten 72 off 90 balls includ ing nine fours, as he scored 36 of

the remaining 45 runs needed for victory.

Clitheroe will need to get back

to winning ways if they are to guarantee themselves a Lan cashire Cup place, as they slipped to fourth in the table. . They face a double-header at

the weekend. Clitheroe entertain Edenfield on Saturday, before the local derby and table-topping encounter with Ribblesdale Wan derers at Chatburn Road 24 hours later.

Wanderers back to winning ways

RIBBLESDALE Wander ers moved back into third place in the table thanks to this latest win at Oswaldtwistle. Following three succes

sive defeats, it was vital they returned to winning ways. And with just five games

to go, Terry Braithwaite will be hoping for a similar run to last season as they claimed a Lancashire Cup place.

The home side elected to

bat first and found that the pitch had very little bounce in it, and they were in trou ble early on when profes sional Shahid Nawaz bowled Dawson for a duck. Roberts went in similar

fashion four overs later, to bring host paid man Wesley Morrick to the crease, who had been in fine form in recent weeks. He and Burton took the

score to 30 before the open er was caught and bowled by Tom O’Neill for 15. Sadiq offered no shot and

was trapped leg before by Nawaz, who then caught P. Dignan off O’Neill at slip to reduce the home side to 36- 5.

The professional and A.

Dignan grafted well as they looked to compile a target around the 170 mark. However, their hopes were

dashed when captain Terry Braithwaite had Morrick clean-bowled for an excel lent 71. Nawaz returned to the

attack to bowl the latter Dignan for a hard-fought 20, and had Sipocz caught at mid-on by Ian Britcliffe without scoring. ' However, Metcalf and

Smithson hung on at the end to prevent Wanderers from claiming the bonus points.

In reply, Ryan Gladwin

opened with Craig Hall and the pair got the locals off to a great start, putting on 53 in 15 overs before Hall went

Marsh went for six,

although he helped add 19 runs, before Gladwin reached his first senior half- century soon after. Gladwin then fell to a leading edge off Smithson

for 56, before Nawaz took up the baton of steering his side to victory. The pro lost Howard (1) and Peel (9), but remained

for 30, trapped on the back _ unbeaten on 31 to see his foot by Morrick.

side home with 11 overs to

spare. Wanderers face a double

header this weekend when they host Cherry Tree on Saturday, followed by a trip to local rivals Clitheroe on Sunday.

Leaders forced to Settle for a tie

READ had to Settle for a draw on Saturday, to keep their Rib blesdale League title challenge going. But if Sunday’s Ramsbottom

Cup win over Great Harwood was heart-stopping, it was just a continuation of the events at Marshfield 24 hours earlier. Oliver Newby got the table- toppers off to flier after he dis-

TIIERE is no change at the top of

the Clitheroe and District MidWeek Cricket League after the top four all won against lower opposition. Riverside beat R o c h

ester by eight wickets after posting 58-2 in reply to the villagers’ 57-8. Fourth placed Riming-

ton beat Chipping by 14 runs after hitting 112-6 and dismissing their opponents for 98. Calderstones fell to

Catholic Social Club, while Chipping A trounced Low Moor by 94 runs. Chipping s t ill remain

favourites for the title, but in their last two matches they meet second and third placed Catholic Social Club and Riverside respec tively.

missed Tim Canaway for one, while Keith Hornby (2), profes sional Stuart Hornby (8) and Mark Verden (6) also failed to make an impact. Tim Green was the first and

only batsmen to really trouble the Read attack, as he cracked 21 before holing out to Michael Whalley off Oliver Newby. The extras column proved to

be the second highest scorer alongside Davidson on 14, as the hosts were skittled for 77. Read were expected to crack

the runs off with consumate ease, but suffered a double early set back with Nick Marsh (4) trapped leg before by Stuart Hornby, and Terry Little caught by namesake Keith off Tarbox for 15.

That left the visitors on 21-2,

but with Peter Sleep and Craig Walton, that soon accelerated to 50-2. With eight wickets in hand to

get 27 runs, Read were staring victory in the face, but the dis missal of Sleep (19), Walton (9) and Joey Marshall (0) soon made the score 52-5. And a late tail-end collpase

saw Newby run out needing just one for victory, with both sides taking five points and ending on 77 all out. Read remain 12 points clear

of nearest rivals Great Harwood but will be hoping to avoid any further hiccups when they travel to Baxenden on Saturday before entertaining Padiham on Sun day

Whalley are put to the sword

WHALLEY were comprehensively put to the sword at Station Road by Earby on Saturday. Earby’s attack, featuring professional

Steven Crook after she weeks out fol lowing a double hernia operation, restricted the locals to 134-8, before the Applegarth side knocked off the win ning runs inside 28 overs. While Lancashire’s Australian pace

man Crook got back in the groove with figures of 3-50, it was former skipper, veteran Stephen Hipgrave that did most of the damage. The medium pacer took 4-25 off just

16 overs to severely restrict Whalley. And it could have been worse but for

the performances of openers Martin Davies (42) and professional Neil Cord ingley (67), who got the locals off and running in fine style, with an opening

stand of 112. But only Mr Extras could join them

in double figures. Davies was finally out eight short of

a half-century, trapped in front by Hip grave, and after that, Cordingley received little support. Lee Kearsley was bowled by Crook

for three, before the Earby paid man fell for 67. And that was immediately followed

by the removal of Andy Pratt, after he lifted one to Matthew Nutter off Hip grave for five. New Zealander Jason Smith fell to

his Antipodean rival Crook for six, again out to Nutter, and David West- wood, Nick Fielding and David O’Neill all perished for ducks. After the alloted 45 overs, Whalley had failed to set a challenging total,

closing on 134-8, Grunshaw and John Kearsley denying Earby the bowling points. Earby were eager to make amends

for an earlier defeat at the hands of Whalley, and although they lost open er Sam Munns for seven, bowled by Smith, Nutter and Crook settled the visitors down. Crook was out for 19, handing Field

ing a return catch, but skipper Chris Walton and Nutter pressed on before Fielding struck again to induce a caught and bowled dismissal off Nutter for 49. But it was too little, too late as Wal

ton (47 not out) and Nigel Hodge (5 not out) saw Earby ease home. On Saturday, Whalley are at Great

Harwood, before a trip to Settle on Sunday.

M CHATBURN sec- ■uHH onds had an excel

lent Craven and District Cricket League 107-run victory over Ingrow at the weekend. The locals batted first

and were given a good start by Geoff West (23) and Mark Braithwaite (24). This was continued by

Martin Brown (23), Dave Lakin (41) and Aamar Zulfi (38) as Chatburn fin ished on 199-7 after the allotted overs. Ingrow struggled against

good bowling and excellent fielding and were bowled out for 92. The wicket takers were

man of the match Zulfi, with 5-59, and Geoff Lam bert with 4-30.
