Arena, BBC2, 8.00pm. What was it about the Attenbor ough household of the 1920s which produced such high-flyers as David and his older brother Richard? The former is Britain’s premier natural history TV presenter and was once the controller of BBC Two. The channel now pays tribute to the latter, to mark his 80th birthday on Friday. Richard has been labelled as a ’luwie’ thanks to his habit of calling every one ’darling’, but inside the gentle, Santa Claus-like

appearance lurks a tough persona, one who, at becoming disenchanted with the British film industry in the 1950s, formed a pro duction company to make such hard-hitting movies as The L-Shaped Room.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Sky Movies Premier, 7.00pm. The second most successful film after Titanic and it’s not hard to see why. Director Chris Columbus struck just the right tone in adapting JK Rowling’s best-seller, a fantasy adventure which con tains the correct amount of darkness to keep the core audience happy and enough big names to appeal to the adults. Steve Kloves’ screenplay keeps things ticking over nicely and the stars, especially Daniel Raddifie as Harry, breathe life Into the much loved novel.

THE summer lunch for Clitheroe Probus members and partners was held on Fri day a t the Moorcock Inn, Waddington Fell. More than 50 people

enjoyed the meal together and were then entertained over coffee to a selection of Gilbert and Sullivan songs by a talented quartet of singers. Probus member Jim Parker

brought along Frances Prince, his singing teacher from Whalley, Ingrid Riding and Raymond Aspin. Raymond and Jim had

joined the BBC Northern Singers in 1963 and been friends ever since. Accompanied by pianist

Rita Brooks they presented an assortment of songs. A surprise item was the

Probus chairman Paul Duck who gave a Gilbert and Sulli- vanised plaudit to Probus - loosely based on ’The Pirate King’ from the Pirates of Pen zance. He was kept in some sort of

SATELLITE PICK OF THE DAY

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Sky Movies Pre mier, 9.30pm. This 2001 blockbuster remains one of the best computer game movies ever made. Okay the plot may not be up to much - it's essentially a revamp of the Doctor Who Adventure The Key To Time. However, Angelina Jolle Is outstanding as the heroine who has to stop an organisation from finding a device which controls time. Great sets, fine special e f fe c ts and some jaw-dropping stunts, especially as Croft disapatches a bunch of assassins with bungee cords.
