Life in the Valley just gets better
TOP of most if not all the “favoured” lists - th a t is
the Ribble Valley! Life expectancy itself is
higher than for many miles around, at 76 for men and 80 for women, both just above the national figure. When it comes to “housing
tenure”, 73% of people in East Lancashire own their own home, with or without a mortgage. True to form, the Valley’s figure is almost 81%, with 39% outright owner ship, far higher than any other nearby borough’s. The 5.2% council home
occupancy figure is much less than anyone else’s. When it comes to “unfit”
dwellings, a subjective judge ment because many people live in them, Ribble Valley has far less than any other borough, at six per cent. In Blackburn the figure is 42% and in Hynburn 29%.
Rossendale is nearest to the Valley at just over nine per cent.
NOT everything is deadly serious in the property mar ket survey industry - an industry it certainly is, judg ing by the numbers arriving in our office. Yorkshire soap opera
“Emmerdale” offers the type of location coveted by a third of respondents to yet anoth er survey. Picking from suggested
lists, a quarter would like to live next to TV gardener Alan Titchmarsh. Noisy neighbours create
problems for some house holds, although almost three-
quarters of respondents had no complaint at all about the people living near them. For some 13% of people,
neighbour or neighbourhood problems forced a move, but for 38% the reason was pure ly the need for more space. A rural environment and
good local amenities are key factors in choice of new location. Over a third of the movers met their new neigh bours on the day they arrived and three-quarters would be happy to let their neighbours look after their house if they went on holiday. Some 60% of those sur
veyed admitted to borrowing items from neighbours, usu ally gardening equipment, tools and food.
